SUMMARY
Zappos is looking for a Software Development Engineer II to join our Discovery Team, the heart of the customer journey at Zappos. In this role, you will contribute significantly to software development for the core customer journey on Zappos.com, from Homepage to checkout: Search, Search Results, Homepage, Ads, Widgets, Recommendations, and much more. WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Develop and Maintain: Play a key role in the development and maintenance of Java-based applications leveraging AWS services (ECS, SQS, S3, DynamoDB), ensuring our architecture supports scalable, maintainable, and high-quality solutions.
Collaborate for Success: Work closely with product managers, UX designers, and engineers. Your contributions will be crucial in creating optimal customer experiences and steering technology choices.
Coach and Guide: Provide guidance and feedback to help maintain high coding standards and practices. Your efforts will contribute to the growth and development of our engineering team.
Solve Problems: Address complex issues within a well-understood technology strategy. You'll balance business needs with technical solutions to ensure scalability and future growth.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE
At least three (3) years of professional software development experience, including proficiency in at least one programming language and a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, and software design).
At least three (3) years of experience in the full software development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
Hands-on experience with AWS technologies and familiarity with Java 8+, especially with the Spring Framework.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to address ambiguity, making informed decisions based on customer and business insights.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels.
WHAT REALLY WOWS US
Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
Proficiency in DynamoDB, ECS, SQS, SNS, S3, and comfort with CI/CD automation.
Experience with search engines (ideally Solr), enhancing our customers' discovery journey.
Familiarity with open-source tools (Git, SpringMVC, SpringBoot, Maven, Gradle, Ant, JUnit, Jenkins) to help us innovate.
Knack for identifying and implementing operational improvements and solving complex problems with creative solutions.
This role is open to candidates physically located in the following metropolitan statistical areas: Austin, TX; Las Vegas, NV; New York, NY; and Seattle, WA. Candidates who are not physically located in one of these areas may not be considered for this role.
The base pay range for this position is $153,000-174,000 per year ; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, a full range of medical and other benefits is offered.
