Job Description

Battery Materials Chemistry Summer Intern

We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future. We get up every day, roll up our sleeves and build a better world -- together. At Ford, we’re all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Are you ready to change the way the world moves?

Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering team takes new ideas from theory to reality. Every day, we develop advanced energy management and propulsion technologies, create cutting-edge materials and manufacturing processes, and curate world-class cabin experiences that redefine what it means to drive a Ford.

Battery Materials Chemistry Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to a team highly engaged in all aspects of battery material research, and familiar with efforts directed toward developing future battery chemistries.

The internship is Mon-Fri, 40 hours/week on site at the Ford Research & Innovation Center in Dearborn, Michigan. **

Responsibilities**

Responsibilities of the intern role will include:

  • Participate in the complete process of battery material synthesis, characterization, processing material into coin cells, and testing for electrochemical performance. Synthesize battery materials using crystallization reactors in Batch mode, CSTR mode, and Taylor Flow conditions.
  • Develop skills in battery material characterization, including optical microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, X-Ray Fluorescence, ICP, Particle Size Analysis, Surface Area analysis, and Scanning Electron Microscopy.
  • Develop skills using sintering ovens, glove boxes, mixers, film coaters, and calendering machines.
  • Prepare and present research work to coworkers.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's, Master's, or doctorate program in a relevant field such as chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science (preferred)
  • The candidate should be familiar with a wet chemistry lab environment, including safety.
  • Experience working in a battery lab is preferred
