Job Information:

Barrow Brain and Spine’s certified medical coders are responsible for reviewing operative notes and determining the correct ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for complete and accurate reimbursement of our physician’s cranial, spinal, and endovascular surgical fees. Our coders must be familiar with and adhere to federal and state coding regulations and guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Timely review and correction of ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for cranial, spinal, and endovascular surgeries and procedures.
• Determine the correct modifiers, place of service codes, and other critical components for accurate claim submissions.
• Ensure compliance with ever-changing federal and state coding, reimbursement, and HIPAA regulations and guidelines.
• Communicate coding logic to A/R employees for medical necessity and coding appeals.
• Distribute new coding policies and regulations to physicians and staff.
• Attend staff meetings, training sessions and professional development activities.
• Maintain professional affiliations to remain current in the latest health care trends and developments.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

• Current CPC coding certification with neurosurgical and/or ortho spinal surgery coding experience is required.
• Strong analytical and communication skills with the confidence and ability to discuss coding issues with physicians and other staff is required.
• Ability to quickly adapt to change and learn various medical records systems to obtain documentation.
• Centricity experience is preferred.
• Appropriate computer skills: Excel and Microsoft Word preferred.
• College degree preferred.

• Reports to work regularly without undue tardiness.
• Dresses appropriately and professionally.
• Requires flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends.

Typical Physical Demands:

• Prolonged sitting, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching and/or walking.
• Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard, photocopier, fax machine, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment.
• Normal range of hearing and vision to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports.

Typical Working Conditions:

• Work is performed in an office environment, with contact between office staff, physicians, etc. Hybrid work schedule possible.
