The Role:



The Unclaimed Property & Miscellaneous Tax Senior Manager is responsible for managing Unclaimed Property (UP): compliance, audit and recoveries. Represents us  on Federal and/or State UP tax audit matters and controversies, including (1) strategizing and  negotiating audit settlements, (2) drafting and reviewing all legal documents submitted to tax  authorities, including responses to notices of proposed adjustment and information document  requests, (3) developing tax protest, appeals and litigation strategies, and (4) managing outside  counsel, public accountants, and third party tax advisors assisting on complex tax authority  examination issues. Responsible for overseeing all tax related Energy, Utility and miscellaneous  Sales Tax matters and incentives as well as various Employment Tax matters. Guides and coordinates the team on development of energy and  other incentive issues impacted by company-wide initiatives in stores, call centers, distribution centers  and Support Center. Identifies and implements key tax strategies in order to reduce the Company’s overall tax  burden/risk. Authority to sign returns, reports, filings and other communications on behalf of the  Company under penalties of perjury, as necessary. Serves as a leader on cross-functional team(s)  including employment tax and some Federal matters, providing guidance, direction, knowledge and  advice to team members and senior stakeholders. Develops departmental plans and organizational  priorities; is accountable for the performance and results of tax stewardship. Guides process  improvement opportunities for tax function.

Job Responsibilities
  • Guides all Unclaimed Property functions, including Audit and multi-state Compliance. Guides all unclaimed property recoveries.
  • Guides all Employment tax technology and Employment tax legislative matters. Oversee all payroll tax issues. Ensures all payroll tax updates are implemented accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Lead the Energy incentives projects. Manage the incentives together with Store Operations, Store Care and Supply Chain. Coordinate efforts with Finance to add incentives to budgets.
  • Develops and implements short and long-term tax savings strategies by collaborating with the various tax functions. Directly impacts the Company’s tax rate to optimize Earnings per Share.
  • Reviews and ensures that the tax filings minimize the overall tax liability to Walgreens leading to tax savings.
  • Closely collaborates with Finance and Accounting on tax and accounting issues impacting the Company’s financials.
  • Serves as a catalyst and leader on organizational and people development initiatives. Develops, mentors and guides employees.
  • Participates in divisional and company-wide projects and programs to develop engagement for division-wide and company-wide initiatives.
  • Collaborates with business unit leaders and Finance/Accounting to minimize tax disputes and pursue opportunities.
  • Authority to sign returns, reports, filings and other communications on behalf of the Company under penalties of perjury, as necessary.
  • Identifies and evaluates tax issues during due diligence phase of Mergers & Acquisitions process.
  • Manages due diligence and integration process for acquisitions/dispositions and serves as core member of tax acquisition team.
  • Leads research of tax laws, regulations and case law to resolve complex tax issues and resolves technical issues.
