About The Opportunity**

Reporting to the Director of Teaching and Learning Applications, the Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning Applications will provide leadership and vision for supported applications within the WVU ITS portfolio. The Assistant Director provides daily operational oversight of a team of technical professionals. This includes assisting in budgeting, resource planning, and the creation of policies, procedures, and standards for supported and expanding Teaching and Learning services. The Assistant Director is responsible for appropriately allocating resources and, in conjunction with leadership, prioritizing work to align with strategic priorities. The Assistant Director works extensively with all stakeholders to maintain the highest level of service delivery and satisfaction. **

What You'll Do

  • Manages and mentors the Teaching and Learning Applications daily operational team including task management, recruitment, evaluation, training, motivation, and staff development for employees in this unit.
  • Ensures assigned resources are appropriately allocated to effectively accomplish assigned projects and tasks.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with all ITS teams to provide efficient and exceptional learning environments to support our customer experience.
  • Serves as the Subject Matter Expert on assigned projects and ensuring the team is properly engaging with and meeting expectations of customers.
  • Ensures adherence to standardized approaches across Teaching and Learning supported applications and integrations to include, but not limited to, best practices in learning application services administration, support, documentation and implementation.
  • Engages the use of ITS programs, policies, and best practices to ensure delivery and support of Teaching and Learning applications.
  • Regularly reviews and evaluates service requests from institutional project and task stakeholders to determine appropriate resources for implemented or expanded learning portfolio solutions.
  • Maintains high working knowledge of vendor relationships to support customer experience. In conjunction with the Director, establish and implement goals, objectives, policies, and operational procedures, monitor and evaluate learning application service effectiveness and effect improvements as required.
  • Assists the Director in establishing, maintaining, and being accountable to learning application needs across institution.
  • Assists the Director in establishing, maintaining, and being accountable to learning administration standards, update monitoring of integrated platforms and regular review and evaluate usage for both short and long-term effectiveness to support institutional needs.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Education, a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A minimum of six (6) years of combined experience in the following:
    • Practical, on-the-job experience in administering Learning Management Systems including assessment, consultation, integration development and governance.
    • Experience in supervisory project management, organizational and leadership skills which may be acquired through practical experience, though not necessarily gained in the information technology field.
    • Practical, daily operational lead experience in administration and support of Learning Management or similar environments and integrated learning solutions.
    • Experience communicating technical information to a non-technical audience. Strong preference for individuals with experience in a higher education setting supporting faculty, staff, and students.
    • Experience in instructional integration strategies including researching and matching technical learning solutions to institutional technical learning needs.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated high level of project management and consulting skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Learning Management Systems, or similar applications, including design, testing, research of industry standards and enhancement suggestions.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication, collaboration, and team building skills. Professional level writing, editing, and oral communication skills are required, including the ability to present technical materials to a large, non-technical audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare clear, concise and thorough documentation, reporting and knowledge base data with the ability to justify approach used, resolve complex issues, explain and/or train staff on technical features of an application and/or process.
  • Demonstrated ability to express learning management requirements to clients as well as collect and analyze user information, statistics and feedback relating to institutional academic needs.
  • Technical knowledge of Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) integration and supported learning tools.
  • Knowledge of people insight platforms to lead and enhance learning related and client feedback initiatives.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability with enterprising, diplomatic and proactive problem solving and team management skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and follow projects through to completion, manage multiple project tasks with ability to analyze priority requirements.
  • Outstanding people skills, including positive attitude, customer service orientation, the ability to deal effectively with difficult people, the ability to assess politically sensitive issues and respond appropriately, the ability to interact with people at the highest professional levels, and appropriate communication with people from other cultures. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate in challenging and stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with technology and related tools for optimal student engagement.
  • Ability to moderately travel for meetings and/or training.
  • Microsoft Office suite proficiency.
