Position Summary

The Associate Director of Faculty Support and Development drives the strategy for, supervises and serves as primary source of professional development for part-time faculty in the School/College. This position provides onboarding, training, coaching, evaluation and performance management of all part-time faculty in the School/College. While the Chair or Associate Dean serves as direct supervisor for full-time faculty and is primarily responsible for professional development of full-time faculty, this position may indirectly support the onboarding and development of all full-time faculty in the School/College. The Associate Director of Faculty Support and Development collaborates with the academic leadership within the School/College, as well as other Associate Directors of Faculty Support and Development external to the School/College. This position also carries a modest teaching load, modeling effective, and inclusive instruction.

Essential Functions:

  • Drive the strategy for and primary source of professional development for all part-time faculty in respective School/College.
  • Supervise all part-time faculty. In collaboration with the Chair or Associate Dean, conduct faculty onboarding for all newly hired part-time faculty, including but not limited to: meeting over videoconferencing platform to welcome the new faculty to School/College, discuss training needs and a training plan, explain the process of assigning students and determining which courses faculty will teach. Provide resources to assist new faculty and follow up several weeks after the start of teaching to schedule a time to discuss progress, answer questions, and offer developmental support
  • Facilitate faculty orientation courses.
  • Proactively anticipate and address, as well as reactively answer faculty questions about teaching, University procedure, and student engagement via e-mail, phone, or videoconferencing.
  • Conduct a timely initial review (via individual meeting to discuss) for newly hired faculty (shortly after the start of teaching) to include specific areas of success as well as growth. 
  • Create and/or conduct teaching webinars.
  • Mentor Academic Program Directors seeking to improve the quality, rigor, and integrity of programs.
  • Develop inclusive approaches to new faculty assimilation that results in accelerated acclimation and contribution.
  • Assess, evaluate, and counsel faculty to ensure instruction is adaptive, competency-based and student-focused.
  • Regularly check quality of recorded sessions and course end evaluations from students for all faculty teaching in the program.
  • Direct the development, monitoring and coaching of part-time faculty teaching with weekly or bi-weekly (part-time faculty only), monthly and quarterly check-ins, and keeping faculty accountable to performance goals while clearly evaluating areas of success and growth during check-ins.
  • Coach faculty who has identified areas of needed improvement in their teaching performance and/or faculty who request coaching. This includes regular feedback regarding specific areas of performance with clearly communicated, measurable expectations, to include documentation and follow up as needed.
  • Successfully carry a teaching load of two to five (2-5) hours per week or one (1) to two (2) courses per year, modeling effective, inclusive instruction.
  • Investigate any student, faculty, staff or administrative concerns regarding faculty performance or conduct issues in conjunction with Human Resources and/or the Title IX Office as appropriate.
  • Actively engage in the implementation and completion of annual evaluations for all part-time faculty.
  • Distribute communications (obtaining approvals as necessary) to full-time and part-time faculty regarding policies, procedures, job aids, required trainings in support of faculty training and development.
  • Serve as an administrative liaison to other Schools, Colleges and University committees as needed
  • Assist with faculty loading process, transfer of students, coverage of workload during faculty paid time off (such as academic leave, sick leave for part-time faculty, etc.)  as directed by the Dean.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position will supervise multiple part-time faculty.

Supervisor duties to include:

  • Screen applications, interview candidates, and recommend individuals for hiring.
  • Train, coach and intentionally develop part-time faculty in their respective courses.
  • Delegates tasks and provides effective direction to part-time faculty to produce substantial business results.
  • Independently conducts frequent performance feedback weekly, quarterly and annually, to include annual performance evaluations.
  • Make recommendations for salary increases, merit increases (if applicable), promotions and reclassifications.
  • In conjunction with HR, determines corrective action as needed for direct reports.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Terminal degree in discipline in the School/College or related field required; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience teaching in an academic setting. Online educational environment preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years training faculty to teach in an academic setting. Online educational environment preferred.

  • Strong demonstrated ability to drive teaching through engagement for adult learners in an online environment, using multiple modalities, leveraging technology and providing feedback to students that is meaningful, timely, balance and individualized. 
  • Ability to participate as an active team member of the team and organization and work toward a common goal. Contributes fully to the team effort and plays an integral part in the smooth running of teams without necessarily taking the lead.
  • Accepts personal accountability, proactively seeks resolution for personal limitations head-on; and supports honesty and respect towards others, the company and oneself.

  • Working knowledge, principles and practices of office management/systems within a higher education environment, preferred. Demonstrates an understanding of underlying organizational issues.
  • Ability to drive towards achieving measurable and challenging goals to support organizational success. Demonstrates the ability to focus on achieving results consistent with the organization’s objectives. As a leader, develops goals based on the organization’s vision, mission, strategic goals and objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individual of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Work independently and foster a cooperative spirit within a large and/or small team of diverse cultures, while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and frequently changing priorities.
  • Intermediate use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite Applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook.  Experience using Student Information System (SIS) such as SOAR/Peoplesoft systems.

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency. Compensation Range:

Annual Salary: $71,360.00 - $96,340.00
