Database Specialist

Background

The mission of the National Weather Service (NWS), an agency within the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is to provide weather, water and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, and its adjacent waters and oceans to protect life and property and to enhance the national economy.

The Weather and Climate Infrastructure Services (WCCIS) contract supports the NWS's Central Processing and Information Dissemination portfolios. The contract is managed by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Central Operations (NCO). WCCIS supports NCO's mission which is to deliver national and global weather, water, climate and space weather guidance, forecasts, warnings and analyses to a broad range of users and partners. These products and services respond to user needs to protect life and property, enhance the nation's economy, and support the nation's growing need for environmental information. **

Position Description**

• Design, install, and/or upgrade enterprise relational database management systems and application tool.
• Design, install, and/or upgrade enterprise NoSQL database systems and application tool.
• Ensure the performance, integrity and security of different database software including but not limited to PostgreSQL, MongoDB, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, and Sybase.
• Allocate system storage and plan future storage requirements for the database system.
• Work with DevOrgs to optimize queries, indexes, and structure.
• Monitor, tune, and optimize the performance of databases.
• Enroll users and maintain system security.
• Ensure compliance with database vendor license agreement.
• Control and monitor user access to the database.
• Plan for and perform backup and recovery of database information.
• Maintain archived data.
• Generate ad-hoc reports, upon request, by querying from database as per need.
• Troubleshoot any issues concerning databases.
• Participate in 24x7 on-call rotation schedule.

Required Skills

• 6-8 Years of IT experience, specifically in a DBA role
• 6+ years working with PostgreSQL clustering and replication
• 4+ years working with PostGIS
• 4+ years working with MongoDB
• Production experience with MySQL/MariaDB replication and clustering
• Strong working knowledge of SQL Server
• Working knowledge of Sybase
• Demonstrated experience with Open Source/Linux development and production environments
• Good team player with strong analytical, communication and troubleshooting skills
• Able to work under pressure and multi-task
• Ability to work under general supervision;
• Ability to work on-call and off/non-core hours as required.

Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.

Desired

• Experience with other Document/NoSQL DB's a plus
• Experience implementing and maintaining HA with Pacemaker
• Experience implementing and maintaining PGPool
• Experience with MongoDB Ops Manager
• Experience/familiarity using VMWare vCenter
• Experience in designing and automating repetitive processes

Education

BS in computer science, related discipline, or equivalent.

Salary

The salary range for this position is $95,000 - 105,000/year.
