Job Description

This is a remote position based out of the Chicago or Detroit area. **

Responsibilities**

  • Lead the development, review, or audit/assessment of safety work products for clients seeking compliance with standards in automotive functional safety and related fields, including ISO 26262 and similar standards relevant to hardware, software, and system engineering.
  • Employ established methods and frameworks, relevant to functional safety and related fields, to lead the engineering development or review, or audit/assessment of safety cases for embedded software systems.
  • Lead full training events in topics relevant to functional safety and related fields, including ISO 26262 and other similar standards.
  • Provide mentorship and thought leadership in the development of junior-level engineering personnel.
  • Lead business development activities defining Statements of Work (SOWs), providing budgetary estimates, and submitting full proposals for client-funded projects.
  • Leverage industry experience and network to win projects and build the business.
  • Lead client programs, including major/large-scale client programs, by interacting regularly with clients in technical program meetings and project reviews.
  • Address client concerns and resolve client issues.
  • Provide expert technical leadership and guidance to clients in reference to functional safety and related technical fields.
  • Projects may include regular travel to client sites and to other UL locations.
  • Provides leadership and technical advice on special projects.
  • May provide direction as a Primary Designated Engineer or Designated Engineer for specific product categories.
  • Provide leadership and expertise on the strategic direction of the business by providing technical and market expertise to management planning and report-out activities.
  • Perform verification reviews or other technical review activities as directed.
  • This includes roles requiring independent expert technical judgment, such as PDE, review board chair, Regional Lead Reviewer, and similar roles.
  • Represent UL at industry-related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
  • Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact, reports and written communication, and interactions with clients executive-level leadership.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment.
  • Lead the development of UL technical standards and other relevant technical standards (from ISO, IEC, IEEE, SAE, etc. ) by direct participation as member and leader of standards committees.
  • Serve in thought-leadership roles in the technical community, as a contributor to engineering organizations such as technical standards committees, organizing committees, engineering societies and related chapters or regional organizations, technical conferences, and related positions; and by issuing technical publications and presentations exhibiting the thought leadership of UL and the employee.
  • Integrate continuous improvement and safety culture in all aspects of the job.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

  • University Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Computer Science Engineering or a closely related field.
  • 10+ years of automotive electronic product design/development experience.
  • Knowledge of hardware, software, and system levels.
  • Knowledge of ISO 26262.
  • Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.
  • Working knowledge of conformity standards in use in area of expertise.
  • Working knowledge of industry issues, needs, and problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply project-handling concepts in use in area of expertise.
