Job description

What is Ranker?

Ranker is the people-powered source of definitive rankings. Voted one of Fast Companies Most Innovative in 2021 (no. 5), our editors have curated tens of thousands of lists about all aspects of pop culture and beyond. Millions of visitors shape these rankings by voting, making Ranker the ultimate source for the best (and worst) of everything. We also turn the over one billion votes cast on Ranker into opinion graphs of consumer sentiment across all of entertainment and more. These are deep psychographics of what fans love at very granular levels across shows, films, celebrities, games, music and countless other categories. Whatever the topic - TV, movies, video games, sports, brands, food, lifestyle - Ranker puts the vote into the hands of millions rather than a few critics to answer the questions we are most passionate about.

Benefits of working for Ranker

  • Enhance your leadership skills by joining fast-paced and growing media organization
  • Competitive compensation package
  • Competitive benefits plan, including fully-paid medical
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Holidays)
  • Wellness Resources
  • Independently Owned
  • Remote-Friendly (We welcome remote candidates from California, New York, Arizona, Illinois, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Pennsylvania)

The Opportunity

Ranker is seeking a Data Journalist (Polling Analyst) to join our team. This is a uniquely hybrid position, combining the roles of Editor and Analyst. As an integral part of our publishing operations, you will be responsible for evaluating the ongoing outcomes of Ranker's highly trafficked votable content, which has garnered over 1.2 billion votes and counting.

At Ranker, we strive to be the Gallup Poll for topics that Gallup would never actually poll. Your role will involve owning the strategy and execution of content creation, leveraging your expertise in pop culture and a keen eye for results that may require further investigation by a media-savvy mind. You will not only create engaging content but also analyze the results of the millions of monthly votes on ranker.com.

In simple terms, your responsibilities will include understanding Ranker's polling methodologies, identifying trending topics, and assigning relevant angles that align with Ranker's unique format. The final output should captivate our audience, similar to the following example: https://www.ranker.com/list/things-people-think-they-are-good-at/kellie-kreiss?ref=browse_list

  • Training or tangible experience in a polling environment
  • A solid mind for statistics along with some relevant experience
  • Passion for all things pop culture-related
  • Demonstrated track record in story development
  • Excellent copywriting, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in photo editing, web analytics, content management systems, and social publishing
  • Thrives in a fast-moving, high-growth company within an industry that is rapidly evolving
  • Creative problem solver and effective communicator who can make actionable and informed decisions

Nice to Have

  • Strong understanding of Facebook audience development and experience in SEO optimization
  • Experience in writing for short-form video and hosting
  • Extensive knowledge of upcoming movie and television release slate, as well as general entertainment and celebrity news
  • Up-to-date with current digital culture trends
  • Fascination and ideally experience with the intersection between statistics and human nature
