Job Description

We currently have an opportunity for a Corporate Underwriting Consultant to join our North American Specialty Underwriting team in our Canton, MA office or remotely nationwide. The Corporate Underwriting Consultant is considered a Inland Marine and Property technical expert and provides corporate underwriting guidance and consultation to various departments and business units for North America enabling sound underwriting decisions and adoption of regulatory compliant practices for one or more lines of business. This position is instrumental in the coordination and execution of complex projects, processes and consultation on organization-wide projects which involve multiple departments. **

Responsibilities**

  • Consults with and assists business unit leaders and underwriters in North America to determine selection/ rejection and pricing of business by using personal expertise and the company’s underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations for one or more lines of business. (Property, Liability, Auto, Umbrella, Workers’ Compensation, and other Specialty Lines.)
  • Expert understanding of exposures and key coverage issues for Specialty products. Reviews exposures, price, deductibles, ITV, and losses to determine acceptability. Makes underwriting decisions to accept, decline, or modify risks. Implements underwriting decisions in compliance with state insurance regulations.
  • Conducts research, performs analysis, and assists with major organization-wide projects and/or potential issues for existing systems and or processes. Provides business expertise and manages the development, testing and deployment of business, system, product and operational changes. Involved throughout the entire life-cycle of projects assigned. Offers alternatives throughout the process.
  • Fully knowledgeable on the interrelationships between various departments, segments and systems within the North American structure. Works closely with other departments including claims, actuary, product development, regulatory, state filing in an effort to serve the needs of the organization.
  • Coordinates system and processing changes with other departments such as IT, operations, product development, statistical reporting, and regulatory staff to ensure compliance with state law and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Manages external vendors and internal contract consultants to review, recommend and/or vet various vendors and associated contracts for corporate-wide underwriting tools, systems and services.
  • Consultants on the identification of training needs across the organization including business units and operations. Develops guidelines, reference and training materials for work processes and systems.
  • Executes underwriting strategy as determined by management which includes using expertise as a referral resource, and performing underwriting and compliance audits on business units, specific lines of business, and fronting arrangements.
  • Leads line of business meetings with leadership, business units and other stakeholders, communicating internal developments, filings, and tools along with industry and insurance trends.

Requirements:

  • Expert knowledge of technical underwriting, pricing, compliance and coverage issues including insurance products, processes and industry.
  • Must be a proven self-starter with strong multi-tasking and relationship management skills.
  • Must have strong analytical, decision making, problem-solving, communication, presentation, listening, and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work both independently and as a highly collaborative member of a team.
  • Must be able to communicate at all levels of the organization.
  • Must have expert professional knowledge of legislative issues, industry trends and marketplace issues for the line of business(es).
  • Must be able to work in a fast pace and rapidly changing environment.
  • Must be able to act as coach and mentor to junior members of the department.
  • Must maintain a high level of confidentiality, accuracy, and provide follow-through on projects.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite and electronic underwriting systems.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7-10 years of progressively more complex Inland Marine & Property experience required
  • Professional insurance designation is preferred (AICPCU, RPLU)

_Our salary ranges are determined by many factors including location, role, experience and skillset of the candidate. The following ranges displayed reflect the target base salary for new hires but your recruiter will share more specific compensation information with you during the hiring process. The typical base salary range for this position is: $118,000 – $157,000, based on the factors aforementioned. For candidates located in San Francisco, CA; Hoboken, NJ; and the New York City metro area, the base salary range is $138,000 -$161,000. In addition to base salary, full time Intact employees are also eligible for bonus potential and a full range of benefits to include: 401(k) savings and annual contributions of up to 12% of annual salary, competitive paid time off programs, medical, vision and dental plans, mental health support programs, life and disability insurance, paid parental leave and a variety of voluntary benefits.
