Summary**
The Director of Substation must be passionate about the renewable energy business, hardworking, and thrive in the fast pace of a new department with tremendous growth potential in a stable engineering firm. As the leader of the substation team, the candidate is responsible for the overall engineering of substations projects for EVS, leading and managing a team of engineers, as well as ensuring that all substation projects meet safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. This position will report to the Vice President of Renewable Energy.
The position is located in Eden Prairie, MN. Hybrid or remote location considered. **
Essential Functions And Responsibilities**
- Overall responsibility for success of the substation team
- Ensure Quality Assurance and Quality Control and ensure compliance with EVS quality standards
- Create or delegate proposals for the substation group and support the greater electrical group with larger proposals
- Accountable for scope of services and budgets
- Participate in and facilitate meetings with stakeholders and clients
- Instruct, train, and mentor group members
- Work with the VP (Vice President) of Renewable Energy to assess workload, capacity, and hiring needs
- Responsible for financial performance of the substation team
- Active client management and business development to help the substation team meet targets
- Coordinate with civil, greater electrical, survey, geotech, and structural teams as necessary to deliver successful projects Responding to RFPs and lead interviews
- Preparing forecast of workload and monitor backlog
- Responsible for billability of the substation team
- Engineer of record for multiple solar, energy storage, and substation projects
- Support with business development to bring in work from potential clients
- Client management to make sure existing clients are satisfied with EVS’ service and quality
- Participation in client presentations
- Helping the substation team create full design package for high voltage projects
- Gaining functional knowledge of photovoltaic design, power studies, and energy storage
- Keep up with IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and relevant emerging technologies
- Hire, retain, supervise, and manage substation engineers and technicians
- Plan strategically working with VP- renewable energy to grow the substation team
- Responsible for both hiring and termination for the substation team
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in electrical engineering required
- 10+ years’ experience working as an engineer in substation design for an engineering firm or EPC
- 3+ years in a management position with multiple direct reports
- Power systems or utility-related experience is required
- PE (Professional Engineer) in engineering field related to substation design
- Experience with physical and protection and control substation design
- Intimate knowledge of NESC (National Electrical Safety Code), NEC (National Electrical Code), NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), IEEE, and USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) construction practices and design requirements
- Insight of engineering and renewable energy systems
- Strong project management skills with a track record of successfully delivering substation projects on time and within budget.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience in leading and managing technical teams
- Ensure that all substation projects meet safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements
- Understanding of grounding, lightning protection, and bus rating analysis
- Working knowledge of NERC, FERC, and CIP requirements
- Excellent organizational skills: proficient with MS Excel spreadsheets and data management
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Exceptional leadership and communication skills
- Background in substation design with project experience in medium and high voltage AC
