Job Description:

Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (LADDL) is hiring a technical person with experience in serology, endocrinology, and bacteriology techniques. The incumbents' primary responsibilities will be to perform bench-level diagnostic testing, result recording, analysis, interpretation, and reporting test results to the clients, government, and state agencies using a laboratory information management system (LIMS). The incumbent will handle, process, and test specimens from all animal species, including nonhuman primates and humans. The incumbent is expected to provide some independent analysis and interpretation of test results. In addition, the incumbent must assist in the LADDL receiving and accessioning section of the LADDL as needed.

Job Responsibilities:

70% - The primary job responsibilities of the incumbents will include performing a variety of diagnostic tests or assays, recording results, entering test results into USA-LIMS, and analyzing and reporting test results to clients, government, and state agencies. Take responsibility for organizing, archiving, and cataloging specimens and maintaining the laboratory inventory. Assist in test development and assay validation. Provide general laboratory support, including preparation and maintenance of stocks of consumable materials, reagents, supplies, and recyclable items. Order reagents and supplies as needed.

15% - The incumbent will be cross-trained on the job in bacteriology, serology, parasitology, and virology test procedures. Will participate in National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), Vet-LIRN, and CDC proficiency testing (PT) programs and laboratory investigations. In addition to a typical work schedule (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), may be scheduled to work weekends, split shifts, overtime, holidays, and attend scientific meetings or training. Assist in writing and reviewing standard operating procedures and adhering to the laboratory quality management system. Maintain training requirements for operations, safety, and biosafety to prevent accidental infection, contamination or spread of infection, or errors that will nullify testing results.

10% - Receiving and Accessioning: The incumbent will perform the following job duties: (i). Receive and access specimens submitted daily for testing at the LADDL. (ii). Receive animals for cremation, process paperwork, and make sure cremains are shipped to the owners on time; (iii). Respond to inquiries from the veterinary community by phone, e-mail, and in-person regarding sample submission and testing capabilities of the lab. iv). Assist with data entry for samples submitted for testing into the Laboratory Information Management Software (LIMS); (v). Report information about damaged or incomplete submissions to the submitting veterinarians; (vi). Receive payments using credit cards and work with the billing coordinator to finalize financial transactions; and must be willing to handle specimens that may be infected with various animal and human pathogens (i.e., zoonotic disease agents including prions) and work with hazardous chemicals. The incumbent is also required to work closely with the business office personnel to ensure that all data is entered accurately, and clients are billed appropriately and adhere to all safety and biosafety procedures during the handling of samples.

5% - Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or related field with 1 year of experience.

Specific experience with testing methods such as bacterial cultures, identification of bacteria and performing antimicrobial sensitivity testing, serological test (ELISA, IFA, serum neutralization, AGID, etc.), and endocrinology (i.e., testing for hormone levels).

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Chemistry, Toxicology, Biology, or related field with 3 years of experience.

Specific experience in a veterinary and/or human diagnostic service or industrial biological laboratory. Experience and/or demonstrated working knowledge of laboratory assays. Experience or demonstrated knowledge of quality assurance/quality controls.

Preferred certifications/licenses - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP; i.e., Microbiology [M] or Specialty in Microbiology [SM]), American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) Diplomates, National Registry of Certified Microbiologist (NRCM) or equivalent specialty certification. Experience in quality control/quality assurance in a laboratory setting and a laboratory technician in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Have experience with computer software (MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, LIS/LIMS, document management software, etc.) and be able to generate reports. Ability to analyze data and create and review SOPS and protocols. Excellent communication skills and a desire to help others achieve their best.

Special and Physical Qualifications:

Essential Personnel - This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.

Requires to be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, climbing, crawling, twisting, pushing/pulling, grasping, and squatting.

Must be able to accurately distinguish between different colors and have near-vision acuity at 20 inches or less. Visual acuity adequate to discern minute details such as direction of hair growth in skin. Must be comfortable and knowledgeable with the handling of hazardous materials (e.g. formalin, blood and bodily fluids as potential sources of bacterial and viral pathogens including zoonotic agents such as; Leptospirosis, Rabies, Salmonellosis, and Western Nile virus). Position require occasional holiday and weekend work. Must be willing to handle formalin fixed human and monkey tissues.
