Job description

60 Decibels is a tech-powered impact measurement company that makes it easy to listen to the people who matter most. We've been in business as an independent entity since early 2019, when we spun out of the global Impact Investor Acumen.

We believe that the best way to understand social impact is by talking to the people experiencing that impact. It sounds obvious when you say it, but that is not the typical practice for many impact investors, corporations and foundations working to create social change.

We collect social impact data directly from beneficiaries (customers / employees / suppliers) using our network of 1000+ trained research assistants in 75+ countries. We do it quickly and without the fuss typically associated with measuring social impact. Our research assistants speak directly to customers to understand their lived experience; and our team turns all this data into benchmarked social performance reports, with accompanying insights, to help our clients demonstrate and improve social performance.

By making impact measurement simple, scalable, and comparable, we not only enable organizations to improve their products and services; we also help transform what it means to credibly measure impact, ensuring that the voices of those who matter most are always part of the story.

What is this opportunity?
60 Decibels works with skilled Translators to assist with the translation of various documents including survey tools, datasets, etc. from English into specific local languages. Once vetted, our freelance Translators will be eligible for projects on a short-term, contractual basis.

What are the key tasks?
The primary responsibility of a Translator is to return the requested document(s) translated into the required language at high quality, while maintaining source formatting, in a timely manner. 60 Decibels provides the necessary document(s) and the required timeline. Successful Translators are able to provide high quality translations, communicate proactively and regularly with the 60 Decibels team, and have an organized approach to their work. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Translate documents from English into local languages.
  2. Ensure accurate translations while maintaining source formatting.
  3. Communicate proactively with the 60 Decibels team to resolve issues.
  4. Deliver work within agreed timelines.

Who is the ideal Translator?
This is a great opportunity for Translators with wide experience in the field. We are looking for translators who are clear, responsive communicators and motivated, independent workers. This position requires strong time management skills and ability to deliver on deadlines. 60 Decibels projects are country-specific, and Translators must be highly proficient in English and at least one local language that they have experience translating with.

What is the time commitment and is this a full-time job?
If you are selected you will be eligible for short-term contracts based on 60 Decibels’ project pipeline. Payment will be on a per hour basis. The hourly rate is determined based on the assumption that you will translate ~400 words per hour and the specific per word rate for the language you are translating into. This is an ideal position for someone who works freelance, is in school part-time, or does not otherwise currently have a full-time job.

What materials do I need to do this job well?
You’ll need access to a laptop or computer, a stable internet connection, and somewhere quiet to work. Allowances for internet use during projects will be given by 60 Decibels.
