Position Overview:

Senior leader of the Legal and Risk Services Department reporting directly to the General Counsel. Responsible at the enterprise level to shape, advance and deliver legal services with respect to all regulatory matters. Develop a system wide strategy, integrate approach and aligned team for health care regulatory advice, training and monitoring that aligns with Sutter Health’s overall strategic direction. This includes, but is not limited to, Medicare/Medicare Advantage and Medicaid requirements, federal and state fraud and abuse laws and other healthcare regulatory laws, privacy, federal and state antitrust laws, federal and state election laws as such matters arise in the context of political giving, supporting clinical and IT teams regarding regulatory matters as they arise in the development of clinical initiatives and artificial intelligence programs.

Job Description:

Education/Licensure: 

  • Doctorate: Juris Doctorate - Law required

  • J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school. 

  • Licensed to practice law and a member in good standing of a state bar association 

 

Experience: 

  • 15 years of regulatory legal experience at a law firm or in-house position. 

  • Experience with healthcare industry preferred. 

  • Experience overseeing an in-house regulatory lane in a complex healthcare organization with responsibilities to deliver comprehensive regulatory advice.

  • Experience reporting directly to the general counsel, interacting with the Board of Directors, interacting with C-suite leadership.  

 

Knowledge: 

  • Extensive knowledge of health care laws, including Stark, Anti-kickback Statute and False Claims Act, antitrust, privacy, managed care, and regulations impacting care delivery.

  • Familiarity with licensure, certification and accreditation requirements is essential. 

  • Knowledge of nonprofit regulations. 

  • Strong business acumen with healthcare experience.

Pay Range is $173.68 to $234.98 / hour

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
