Job description

Role: Employment Lawyer

Location: Los Angeles, California, USA (Remote Considered, but Must Have Active CA Law License)

Job Type: CONTRACT

Experience Required: 12 - 18 years

Hours: Full-time (40 hours per week)

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Employment Lawyer to join a dynamic legal team on a contract basis. The selected candidate will provide comprehensive legal support, offering strategic advice and counsel to human resources and business leaders on a wide range of employment-related matters. This role requires a legal professional with deep expertise in employment law, particularly within California, and experience working both in private practice and in-house counsel environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as lead counsel on employment-related legal matters, including restrictive covenants, background checks, I-9 audits, and employee onboarding/offboarding issues.
  • Provide guidance on complex employment matters such as terminations, employee relations, wage and hour compliance, executive compensation, pay transparency, and workplace policies.
  • Draft and negotiate various employment agreements, including employment contracts, severance agreements, offer letters, and independent contractor agreements.
  • Develop and implement employment policies and procedures in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Advise on employee benefits, leave of absence policies, and disability accommodation.
  • Support M&A transactions by conducting employment-related due diligence and assisting with workforce integration.
  • Conduct internal workplace investigations and compliance audits as needed.
  • Resolve employment disputes through negotiation and informal resolution tactics before they escalate into litigation.
  • Design and deliver training programs for HR, managers, and employees on employment law topics, including workplace harassment and compliance.
  • Collaborate with outside counsel on litigation matters and other legal proceedings.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality while ensuring compliance with company policies, ethical guidelines, and legal standards.

Required Qualifications:

  • JD degree from an accredited U.S. university.
  • Licensed to practice law in California (must be in good standing).
  • Minimum 10 years of substantive employment law experience.
  • At least 2 years of in-house counsel experience within an organization.
  • Strong expertise in California and federal employment law, including wage and hour laws, E-Verify, workplace investigations, and executive compensation.
  • Proven ability to provide strategic legal counsel to business leaders and HR teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong negotiation and contract drafting skills.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced corporate or legal environment with the ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently.

Nice to Have Qualifications:

  • Experience in an entertainment organization is a plus.
  • Holder of the Association of Workplace Investigators Certificate.
  • Transactional experience, including involvement in M&A, and employment-related matters.
  • Prior experience designing and conducting employment law training programs.

Work Arrangement & Travel Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. (U.S. citizen or Green Card holder only).
  • This role is remote-friendly, but candidates must have an active California law license.
  • Candidates who have worked at or been employed by Creative Artists Agency (CAA) are not eligible for this role.
