Description:

Course number and title: VCC392H5S - Topics in Visual Culture and Communication - Medicine in Visual Culture 

Topic description: This course will seek to address the complex relationship between medical history and forms of visual art and culture, from Galenic medicine to the technological innovations of contemporary medical practice.  Class lectures will consider a range of subject matter, including traditions of anatomical illustration and dissection, obstetrical models, evolving representations of disease, pathology, and madness, visual responses to vaccination and public health programs, and the imaging of the invisible microbial world. 

 

Estimated course enrolment: 50

 

Estimated TA support: 1 TA grader

 

Online class schedule:  Monday and Wednesday 13:00-15:00

 

Sessional dates of appointment:  July 2 - August 14, 2025

$9,457.90 (Sessional Lecturer I)

Minimum qualifications: A Ph.D is essential. Demonstrated excellence in teaching this subject matter is required. Experience as a sole responsibility course instructor is an asset.

 

Description of online duties: (May include but are not limited to): all normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course material, preparation and delivery of assignments, tests and/or exams, supervision of teaching assistants, marking of students’ work, submission of grades to university officials, and holding regular office hours.

Scheduling of guest speakers is limited to one week class session.
