Job description

  • Salary : £31,772 + (Dependant on skills and experience)
  • Hours: 35 per week
  • Contract type: Permanent

Role Overview:
As part of the Acting Team, contributing to the development and provision of specialist learning resources to support the teaching, learning and research needs of the academic community.

To provide technical support in the form of inductions and demonstrations to students in the use of specialist equipment.

To ensure the learning environment is adequately equipped and that learners are competent in the use of machines and equipment as appropriate to support individual/module projects.

Key Responsibilities:

To undertake general technical theatre duties, including:

  • Rigging and de-rigging lighting and sound systems
  • Plotting and operation of lighting boards
  • Music editing and recording of sound and music
  • Supervising get-ins and get-outs
  • Acting as Duty Technician during performances
  • Undertaking regular inspection of equipment and advising on repair or replacement
  • Using relevant IT programmes for work duties

Ensure the tracking, loaning and return of digital media services equipment to staff and students using the university kit managing system.

  • Where appropriate, to engage in supporting the lighting, sound and production of film and studio productions both on site and on location. To maintain and demonstrate up-to-date operational technical knowledge and participate in the use of theatre, photographic and video production equipment, video and audio recording and post production equipment and digital manipulation
  • The organisation and maintenance of theatre technical resources, including arrangement for PAT testing and recommendations for upgrades
  • Where appropriate, to engage in lighting, sound and stage set design for acting performances
  • Provide workshops, guidance, support, demonstrations and instruction to students and staff on new and existing equipment, processes and techniques. Assist in preparation of technical handouts and advise on technical requirements for curriculum development, monitoring, and audits and inspections.  
  • Provide demonstrations and tuition in techniques, processes and safe practice to individuals and groups of students to enable them to develop competence in their application of best practice, techniques and methods used within the area.
  • Deliver Health and Safety and Technical Operations induction programmes to students with particular reference to studio and workshop usage, in order to ensure safe working practices in accordance with the University’s Health & Safety Policy
  • To support students, staff and visiting professionals with all the technical aspects of their practical work: ensuring effective communication systems are developed and implemented; instructing them in the safe and effective use of technical equipment; providing (where relevant) effective training in use of technical and other resources; working collaboratively with students and staff in studio and workshop-based practice
  • To liaise with the Director of Content, Course Leaders and academic colleagues on the planning, scheduling and deployment of technical support and resources in relation to the delivery of specific programmes’ learning outcomes.

To contribute to the development of a performance culture at Regent’s University London by:

  • acting as technical production lead for theatre productions and arts events
  • attending production meetings as required
  • specifying and sourcing equipment for performances
  • ad hoc technical assistance for Regents University London events, as requested
  • Ensure effective maintenance and cleaning of specialist machinery and equipment, liaise with suppliers and assist in the coordination of inventories as required. Maintain stocks, keep appropriate records and liaise on the administration of the budget as requested.
  • Creation of technical training materials for the use of Studio and editing resources using the University VLE
  • To provide basic first line troubleshooting/ fault findings and to escalate to ITS when required 
  • To keep up to date with professional developments and to maintain contacts with and membership of relevant professional and industry bodies.
  • Where appropriate, to engage in professional technical practice and to contribute to the development of practice-based research at Regent’s University London
  • Comply with and support the University’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing policies and take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of others
  • Any other relevant duties that may arise from time to time as requested by the Director of IT, Head of ITS Service Operations, or other senior management of the University
  • To proactively work as a member of the Media Services team deputising for the Film & Screen Technical Demonstrator and Kit Room Co-Ordinator when required.
