A Brief Overview

Serves as a medical consultant for reinsurance underwriting and claims. Evaluates medical tests/information, assesses risks, performs mortality and morbidity analysis, and researches medical procedures and information. Maintains expert general knowledge of medicine, current developments and research. Provides ongoing education and training for underwriters and claims examiners. Manages special projects and contributes to the administrative functioning of the medical department at the discretion of the chief medical director.

What You Will Do

  • Provides medical underwriting consultations and assessments, which includes the evaluation of medical factors of proposed underwriting risks while maintaining an acceptable mortality range and evaluation of medical factors in death claims. This is accomplished by using Risk selection methods based on current clinical and insurance medical knowledge. Mortality and morbidity analysis. Analysis from reviewing electrocardiograms, stress tests, chest x-rays, and other diagnostic tests as requested.
  • Provides ongoing education and training for RGA underwriters and claims examiners through informal case-related interactions as well as formal scheduled presentations
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of effective business relationships with client medical directors and underwriters. Supports RGA’s position as an industry expert in underwriting and insurance medicine through scheduled client educational sessions and other activities as requested.
  • Research and analyze medical trends for risk management analysis impact and assist in developing and integrating medical practice policies into underwriting guidelines and manuals.
  • Manages special projects and contributes to the administrative functioning of the medical department at the discretion of the chief medical director. Participates, as a subject matter expert, leader or team member, in committees, meetings and presentations, as required.
  • Writes articles and contributes information for company and industry medical publications.
  • Maintains medical expertise as a life insurance medical director by keeping abreast of new developments in the related fields of insurance underwriting and medicine. Participates in medical/underwriting professional association and pursues industry coursework and credentials including Board of Insurance Medicine certification, FALU and FLMI designations.
  • Serves as a liaison with the medical community and other insurance professionals.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO with a degree from an accredited medical school required
  • 5+ Years of experience in clinical medicine required
  • Experience as a life insurance medical director preferred
  • Experience with statistical or data analysis or AI preferred
  • Experience with accelerated or automated underwriting programs preferred
  • Experience in setting underwriting standards, evaluating new procedures and new research developments preferred
  • Basic Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills required
  • Highly advanced clinical skills. Highly advanced knowledge of EKGs and other tests associated with the underwriting process. required
  • Highly advanced knowledge of standard and excess mortality and morbidity as it relates to specific disease states. Highly advanced knowledge of insurance medical practices, trends and research and the ability to apply this knowledge to job and communicate this knowledge to underwriters and management. required
  • Highly advanced ability to comprehend and interpret insurance and contract documents. required
  • Exceptional oral and written communication and presentation skills, demonstrating the ability to convey business terminology that is meaningful and well received by all stakeholders, including customers and associates. required
  • Advanced knowledge of broad business practices required
  • Highly advanced persuasion skills when working with internal partners and external customers to resolve issues/problems. required
  • Expertise in implementing change, ensuring understanding, participation and ownership. required
  • Highly advanced investigative, analytical and problem solving skills utilizing experience, research, guidelines and internal resources. required
  • Exceptional skills in managing multiple tasks, projects and/or sub-teams simultaneously, including the ability to handle changing priorities and ability delegate key areas of responsibility. required
  • Exceptional ability to work well within team. Exceptional ability to foster a teamwork and customer service focused environment required
  • Multi-lingual preferred
  • Active medical license in good standing Required
  • Specialization with board certification in primary care (internal medicine, family practice), cardiology, oncology or endocrinology Preferred

Compensation Range

$209,700.00 - $312,600.00 Annual

Base pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and market location. In addition, RGA provides an annual bonus plan that includes all roles and some positions are eligible for participation in our long-term equity incentive plan. RGA also maintains a full range of health, retirement, and other employee benefits.
