About RRI

RRI is a global coalition of over 200 organizations dedicated to advancing the forest, land, and resource rights of Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, local communities, and the women within these groups. RRI leverages the power of its global coalition to amplify the voices of local peoples and proactively engage governments, multilateral institutions, and private sector actors to adopt institutional and market reforms that support the realization of rights. Its members capitalize on each other’s strengths, expertise, and geographic reach to achieve solutions more effectively and efficiently. By advancing a strategic understanding of the global threats and opportunities resulting from insecure land and resource rights, RRI develops and promotes rights-based approaches to business and development and catalyzes effective solutions to scale rural tenure reform and enhance sustainable resource governance.   

Background

The Rights and Resources Africa Team is experiencing significant growth in the work that they are doing and the resources that they are stewarding on behalf of the partners and rightsholders that are part of the Africa coalition. With growth comes opportunity and the need to reflect on what needs to evolve to support individuals and the team in delivering on its objectives. The retreat will provide precious time to collectively come together as a team and build a sense of shared purpose and mission.  

The retreat will take place at RRI’s Washington, DC office of RRI on March 19-21, 2025.  

Terms of Reference

RRI will engage a facilitator to design and deliver a retreat focused on: building relationships and trust among Africa team members; creating a shared understanding of the work that needs to be done in 2025; and developing insights into better ways to support the different work streams and ways in which to collaborate in service of the team’s goals and objectives. 

Retreat Objectives 

  1. Create space and opportunity for team building and deepening relationships within Rights and Resources Africa Team.  
  2. Build shared understanding of the work for 2025 and identify clear roles and responsibilities of each team member.  
  3. Identify opportunities for better work and possibilities to dismantle obstacles that get in the way.  

Design Principles 

  • Maximize opportunities for connection and relationship building.  
  • Use of diverse approaches and activities to meet the needs of different learning types  
  • Co-design between facilitator and key stakeholders.  
  • Incorporate elements of play and fun to maintain energy enable learning and change.  
  • Ensure forward momentum to carry beyond the retreat itself.  

The scope of the facilitator will include: 

1. Before:  

  • Consultation with 4-5 members of Rights and Resources (including Africa Program Director, Senior Director of Programs, President, and COO) to inform design. 
  • Review of Rights and Resources Africa Program materials, including current grant agreements.   
  • Agenda design and refinement with Africa Program Director and Senior Director of Programs. 

2. During  

  • Delivery of retreat sessions. 
  • Post session debriefs with key leaders to reflect and learn.  
  • Redesign of sessions 2 and 3 as needed.  

3. After  

  • Postworkshop debrief with key leaders. 
  • Workshop summary document. 

 Consultant Deliverables 

  • Workshop agenda and tools  
  • Photographic Capture (PPT) of any materials created during the retreat (e.g. team agreements etc.)  
  • Workshop summary document 

Minimum Requirements 

Prospective facilitators must meet the following criteria: 

  • Proven experience (minimum 5 years) in facilitating strategic planning sessions, team retreats, or organizational development workshops for mission-driven organizations. 
  • Strong background in team-building, change management, and leadership development, particularly in growing and evolving teams. 
  • Demonstrated ability to create inclusive and participatory facilitation processes that encourage collaboration and constructive dialogue. 
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to navigate diverse perspectives and group dynamics. 
  • Experience in developing actionable takeaways and follow-up recommendations to sustain team growth and effectiveness. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience working with international teams, multicultural settings, or organizations focused on human rights, social justice, or resource governance. 

Key Contract Terms 

Contract Type 

This will be a time plus materials contract. The consultant will be paid an hourly fee for all activities undertaken against the terms of reference, plus reimbursement of any approved expenses/materials, including travel.   

All projected costs/expenses must be included in the consultant’s proposal. 

Equipment and Supplies 

Unless stated otherwise in this RFP, the consultant is responsible for providing equipment and/or supplies required to perform the services.  

Submission Requirements 

Interested facilitators should submit a proposal that includes: 

  1. Facilitator’s Background & Experience: A description of relevant experience in leading team retreats, particularly for organizations undergoing growth and change. 
  2. Approach & Methodology: A proposed facilitation approach, agenda outline, and engagement strategies. 
  3. Relevant Work Samples: Examples of past facilitation work or client references. 
  4. Proposed Budget: A detailed breakdown of facilitation fees, travel costs (if applicable), and any other associated expenses. 
  5. Availability & Logistics: Confirmation of availability for the retreat dates and any logistical needs.
