Job description

About the Company

Armada is an edge computing startup that provides computing infrastructure to remote areas where connectivity and cloud infrastructure is limited, as well as areas where data needs to be processed locally for real-time analytics and AI at the edge. We’re looking to bring on the most brilliant minds to help further our mission of bridging the digital divide with advanced technology infrastructure that can be rapidly deployed anywhere.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Modular Data Center Liquid Cooling Specialist to join our team. This role involves designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing liquid cooling systems within modular data centers to ensure efficient thermal management, operational reliability, and sustainability. The ideal candidate has expertise in liquid cooling technologies, traditional air-cooled technologies, data center infrastructure, and the integration of advanced cooling systems in modular environments.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Implementation:

  • Develop and design liquid cooling solutions tailored for modular data center applications, ensuring scalability and adaptability.
  • Lead design efforts within a team of modular data center engineers for new modular form factors.
  • Integrate liquid cooling systems into modular data center layouts, accounting for space, energy efficiency, and performance requirements.
  • Assist in the selection and standardization of proper hardware manufacturers.

Operations and Maintenance:

  • Monitor and maintain liquid cooling systems to ensure optimal performance, safety, and reliability.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues in liquid cooling systems, including leaks, flow inconsistencies, or hardware malfunctions.

System Optimization:

  • Analyze cooling performance metrics and implement strategies to maximize energy efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and methods to enhance cooling system capabilities and environmental sustainability.

Data Center Deployment:

  • Ability to lead/oversee modular data center deployment within the infrastructure team in multiple regions of the globe.
  • Ability to assist with air-cooled deployments when extra hands are needed.
  • Strong customer communication skills, and the ability to help define customer requirements as part of pre-sales (CPU/GPU, sizing, etc.)

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including data center architects, IT engineers, and facility managers, to integrate liquid cooling systems seamlessly into broader infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to procure components and ensure compatibility with existing systems.

Compliance and Documentation:

  • Ensure all cooling systems comply with industry standards, regulations, and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of system designs, performance metrics, maintenance schedules, and incident reports.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Thermal Systems, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications in cooling or HVAC systems are a plus.

Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in designing, implementing, and managing liquid cooling systems, preferably in data center or industrial environments.
  • Hands-on experience with modular data center solutions is highly desirable.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in liquid cooling technologies, including direct-to-chip cooling, immersion cooling, and chilled water systems.
  • Strong familiarity with the different manufacturers in the industry and their key strengths and weaknesses (relationships with the manufacturers is a plus)
  • Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools and thermal modeling software or thermal management principles.
  • Knowledge of data center power and cooling requirements, including airflow management and heat dissipation.
  • Proficiency in using monitoring tools and software for cooling system performance.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards for data center environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
  • Familiarity with data center electrical componentry.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously.

Citizenship:

  • US Citizenship required due to the nature of the work.

Preferred Certifications

  • Data Center Certified Associate (DCCA) or equivalent.
  • Certified Liquid Cooling Professional (CLCP) or relevant HVAC certifications.
  • Proficiency in environmental standards such as LEED or ISO 50001.
  • Certifications such as HVAC Technician, Data Center Design Engineer (DCD), or related.
  • Experience with emerging technologies like immersion cooling.

Work Environment

  • Remote position
  • Seattle area or San Francisco area are a plus, but not a must
  • May require travel to modular data center deployment sites.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including exposure to varying temperatures and confined spaces.
  • Occasional on-call availability for emergency system repairs as we scale.
  • Ability to travel globally (estimating a 1 week per month travel average on an annual basis)
