The Risk Manager for Payments, Transfers, and Digital Wallet at MoneyGram is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing and enhancing our risk management framework across all payment and credit operations. This role involves developing and refining credit underwriting strategies, managing digital wallet initiatives, and ensuring robust controls against account takeover (ATO) and first-party fraud. The successful candidate will work closely with Compliance, Operations, and Product teams to integrate risk management practices that optimize customer experience and comply with regulatory requirements.

What You Will Do

  • Transfer and Payment Risk Management: Develop and refine underwriting strategies that consider payment methods, customer profiles, product, and geographic risks. Ensure these strategies are adaptive to changes in market conditions and regulatory landscapes.
  • Digital Wallet Oversight: Lead risk strategies for digital wallet offerings, including customer onboarding, transaction monitoring, and fraud prevention. Coordinate with product teams to ensure that digital wallet solutions are secure and compliant with industry standards.
  • Vendor Solution Integration: Manage the integration and functional performance of third-party risk solutions. Conduct rigorous back-testing of these solutions to ensure they meet our risk mitigation standards and contribute positively to our operational goals.
  • Process Optimization for Manual Review Teams: Review and streamline the processes of manual review teams to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness. Implement best practices in fraud detection and customer verification that reduce operational costs while maintaining high security.
  • Compliance and Risk Platform Collaboration: Actively participate in compliance and risk platform initiatives, providing expert risk assessments and contributing to the development of integrated risk management tools and practices.
  • ACH and Card Risk Management: Drive the risk management component of ACH transactions, including the adoption of Instant ACH and FedNow services. Develop and implement card risk assessment frameworks to mitigate risks associated with card-not-present transactions.
  • First-Party Fraud Controls: Evaluate and implement effective controls to detect and prevent first-party fraud. Work closely with analytics teams to understand fraud patterns and develop predictive models that reduce exposure to fraudulent activities.
  • ATO Prevention and Network Security: Develop comprehensive strategies to prevent account takeovers, incorporating advanced security measures such as firewall rules, device intelligence, and network monitoring.
  • Customer Experience Management: Oversee initiatives aimed at optimizing customer experience in areas such as account locks, card freezes, and signup processes. Ensure that customer interactions, especially those involving security concerns, are handled efficiently and sensitively to maintain trust and satisfaction.

Who You Are

  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in data analysis tools and platforms. Excellent communication skills are essential for interacting with various stakeholders and presenting risk findings.
  • Deep understanding of the regulatory environment affecting payments and credit operations. Knowledge of emerging technologies in payment systems and risk management, such as blockchain, AI, and machine learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and cross-functional teams effectively. Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to work under pressure and manage tight deadlines.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 10 years in risk management, particularly in payments or credit environments within the financial services industry. Experience in digital payments and fraud prevention strategies is crucial.
