Job description

Salary range: from £36,159 + (Depending on skills and experience) pro rata

Hours: 21 per week

Closing date: 28th February 2025

Overview of the role

The primary focus of this role will be to develop students’ academic writing and study skills. This will encompass providing support to students from Foundation level 3, through to level 6 and 7 students working on more advanced work. The post holder will assist with identifying the needs of cohorts and individuals’ requirements and provide a variety of means by which these can be addressed. The post-holder will support students in a variety of academic skills including academic writing, presentation skills, critical evaluation, planning and structuring as well as digital skills and digital literacy.

The post-holder will aim at creating a supportive and empathic learning environment for a multicultural and multilingual study body. The post-holder will also play a key role in promoting and embedding academic skills support across the university through engagement with students, academic staff and other relevant staff and departments.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one academic skills support to individual students across the university at all levels of study from foundation to postgraduate. 
  • Support students across a variety of academic skills including academic writing, presentation skills, critical evaluation, planning and structuring as well as digital skills and digital literacy. 
  • Design and deliver face-to-face academic skills workshops in a variety of forms (timetabled classroom sessions, workshops, themed learning events) 
  • Work with colleagues across Regent’s to develop the Academic Skills service and improve awareness within the student body 
  • Liaise with relevant academic colleagues and other relevant departments and members of staff to support students at risk of not progressing 
  • Utilise and, where appropriate, develop online academic skills support materials 
  • Support the collection and analysis of appropriate data in order to monitor and continuously improve academic skills provision 
  • Contribute to the organisation of induction activities and other events aimed at enhancing student engagement at Regent’s 
  • Actively seek to implement the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy and promote equality of opportunity in relation to the duties of the post 
  • Undertake additional training and development in accordance with the needs of the post 
  • Actively seek to implement the University’s health and safety policy, and give due regard to the health  
  • and safety of themselves and others when carrying out duties. 
Essential Criteria for the Role
Experience
  • Proven experience working within the higher education (HE) sector.
  • Experience in teaching and supporting groups, particularly adult learners in higher or further education.
  • Experience providing advice and guidance to students, both individually and in group/class settings.
  • Experience developing high-quality, interactive learning materials.
  • Experience utilizing digital skills and enhancing digital literacy in education.
  • Experience working effectively within a team and in a customer-focused environment, delivering high-quality frontline services.
  • Experience working in an international environment and liaising with a wide range of individuals at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Strong ability to inspire students and collaborate to achieve the best possible outcomes.
  • Confidence in advising and supporting academic staff in integrating skills development into teaching.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced IT skills and the ability to utilize them effectively in an educational setting.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and work under pressure.
  • Ability to deliver advice in a calm, professional, and supportive manner.
  • Understanding of the support needs of a multicultural and multilingual student body.
