Job Description:
Collect and abstract physiological and anatomical data while identifying and prioritizing injury-specific coding of trauma patients for inclusion into a trauma data collection system. The primary purpose of aggregating trauma-related data, from both a state and national perspective, is to provide statistics for research purposes and to have evidence aimed at directing and improving treatments and care-management in effort to optimize outcomes for injured patients. Understand and strive to meet the requirements for various trauma center levels as determined by the Minnesota State Department of Health and/or the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. The requirements set forth by both regulatory organizations determine the ability of a hospital to achieve and/or maintain trauma verification and designation.
Principle Responsibilities
- Critically reviews, analyzes and abstracts medical records ensuring accuracy and integrity in effort to provide evidence for benchmarking, process improvement activities, and development of standards of trauma care.
- Locates and abstracts data from the medical record and official external records involving in-depth review of all pre-hospital and in-hospital documentation of physiological status indicators, time-specific criteria, and procedural details. Provides analysis and abstraction of autopsy reports and other official documentation from the medical examiner’s office.
- Supports site-specific Trauma Program Managers' with appropriate identification and collection of data particular to individual projects or requests. Ensures that the data provided is accurate and complete to serve as a strong foundation for evidence-based projects and initiatives. Provides advice to site-specific Trauma Program Manger’s on the use of graphs, charts, and other visuals aiming for meaningful impact. Delivers quality and consequential materials in the form of reports, scorecards, stats-sheets, graphs, and charts
- Performs routine and regular data audits on self and peers to ensure data validity and reliability. Reports errors or discrepancies for the purpose of self and team education and to improve ongoing quality and performance.
- Facilitates and fosters strong relationships and open and trusting dialogue with trauma leaders from their assigned sites. Emulates a team-focus with emphasis on good communication.
- Works collaboratively with department leadership to develop, enhance and maintain abstraction tools reflective of workflow and element changes. Leads projects when delegated/assigned.
- Monitors and complies with information related to vendor tools and electronic medical record upgrades. Adjusts workflow processes and develops recommendations for the department and specific sites based upon enhancements or upgrades as needed.

Required Qualifications
- Associate's or Vocational degree in a health care field with RHIT/RHIA eligibility or certification OR – Experienced Registered Nurse, Registrar, or Coding Specialist with at least 3 years of trauma-related experience or
- 2 to 5 years experience in medical terminology and physical anatomy
- Will consider new graduate of a Health Information Management Program dependent upon skill and experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a health care field with RHIT/RHIA eligibility or certification OR – Experienced Registered Nurse, Registrar, or Coding Specialist with at least 3 years of trauma-related experience
- 2 to 5 years experience in Trauma Registry work
- 2 to 5 years experience with the National Trauma Data System (NTDS) trauma data definitions
Licenses/Certifications
- Association for the Advancement for Automotive Medicine's (AAAM) requiredwithin 1 Year
- Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) Coding Course requiredwithin 1 Year
- The American Trauma Society's Trauma Registry Course (Basic) requiredwithin 1 Year
- Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) preferred

Pay Range
Pay Range: $32.20 to $44.13 per hour
The pay described reflects the base hiring pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
