Job description

Developing data-driven insights to accelerate the alternative protein industry

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is a nonprofit think tank working to make the global food system better for the planet, people, and animals. Alongside scientists, businesses, and policymakers, GFI’s teams focus on making plant-based, fermentation-enabled, and cultivated meat delicious, affordable, and accessible. Powered by philanthropy, GFI is an international network of organizations advancing alternative proteins as an essential solution needed to meet the world’s climate, global health, food security, and biodiversity goals.

How You Will Make a Difference

In this role, you will have the opportunity to leverage your analytical skills to support GFI’s Corporate Engagement team and provide research, insights, and narratives to motivate and educate the food industry to prioritize alternative proteins. You will be the go-to source for alternative protein category and market data and insights. The Senior Category Analyst will be responsible for:

  • Analyzing category and market data and identifying actionable insights to support GFI’s work and inform the alternative protein industry.
  • Managing GFI’s syndicated retail sales and household panel data and foodservice data initiatives with SPINS and Circana.
  • Translating insights and findings from research and analysis to create and maintain business tools, including industry reports, presentation decks, webinars, and databases.
  • Providing analytical support to Corporate Engagement outreach staff by reviewing research, analyzing data, and presenting it in a clear, concise manner. This may also include helping to prepare the team for meetings by developing related reports and/or presentations or presenting directly to external stakeholders.
  • Organizing and maintaining the department’s market and consumer research, external reports, and syndicated data. This includes creating, updating, and organizing presentation decks with the most recent and compelling data points, charts, and studies.
  • Identifying research and data gaps and putting forward recommendations to address those gaps.
  • Keeping abreast of the latest industry news and insights as it relates to market and consumer information, and regularly updating department resources with the most current information.
  • Coordinating with external data partners to secure data and managing purchasing and usage agreements.
  • Supporting the Associate Director of Market Insights and broader research team with primary consumer research, including providing data and analysis to support research design and collaborating on output that integrates market and consumer data and insights.
  • Working collaboratively within the Corporate Engagement team, as well as across departments and with International affiliates, to align goals, coordinate activities, and report outcomes.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Who We’re Looking For

An ideal candidate for the Senior Category Analyst position will have experience that reflects the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, statistics, economics, or similar is preferred.
  • At least 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Consulting and/or consumer packaged goods industry experience, in the areas of brand management, category insights, market research/analysis, and/or consumer insights.
  • Familiarity with syndicated sales data such as Nielsen, IRI/Circana, and SPINS.
  • Ability to clean and work with large datasets.
  • Experience using data to inform business decisions and to develop research/analysis plans that are responsive to stakeholder questions.
  • Experience creating presentations (PowerPoint and/or Google Slides) and/or writing reports; experience building narratives from data and presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Strong analytical, data management, and data visualization skills, including deep experience with Excel.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to succinctly communicate actionable insights to stakeholders.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work well both independently and in concert with a larger group.
  • Comfort working remotely and in a rapidly growing and evolving organization.
  • Intellectual curiosity and interest in the alternative protein industry.
  • Strong support for GFI’s philosophy and mission; demonstrated interest in public health, environmental sustainability, animal protection, and/or food security.

We want the best people and we don’t want biases holding us back. We use a third-party anonymizing tool to redact personal information from submitted applications — including name, location, contact details, and several other factors — to reduce bias and increase fairness in our process. We strongly encourage people of every race, color, orientation, age, gender, origin, and ability to apply. Since we value a diverse workplace, we prioritize an inclusive climate absent of discrimination and harassment during the application process and after you join the team.

Research indicates that men tend to apply for jobs when they meet just 60% of the criteria, while women and people from other marginalized groups only apply if they are a 100% match. If you are passionate about GFI’s mission and think you have what it takes to be successful in this role even if you don’t check all the boxes, please apply. We’d appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.

Application Instructions

GFI uses an anonymized hiring system that redacts key identifying personal information from all applications. We use this tool as part of a wider effort to reduce bias in our hiring process. Following these instructions will help to ensure your application is not delayed by a failed redaction.

  • Where possible, limit the creative formatting of your documents. If the name on your resume is an inserted image file or is styled with large spaces between each letter, for example, the redaction is likely to fail. Colors and designs are OK, but wherever possible, the text itself should just be regular text.
  • Please use consistent names. It helps to ensure that the name you use in your resume and cover letter is the same as the name you type into the application below. For example, if your name is Jennifer, please sign your cover letter as “Jennifer” rather than “Jenny.”
  • Submit PDF or .docx files only. Other file formats, like .txt, are likely to fail redaction.
  • Please do not include personal identifying information in your responses to the application questions. Referencing past education, work experience, and mission-alignment is OK.
  • Please do not contact the role’s supervisor or any potential member of the hiring team. If you have questions, please email careers@gfi.org

Thank you for helping us to ensure that the redaction process works smoothly and to review your application as quickly as possible!
