Job description

Job Summary:

The Team Lead of Coding is responsible for managing the inpatient and outpatient coding and data abstraction function for our hospital clients by monitoring productivity and workflow and follow-up with management when needed. 

Essential Functions: In addition to working as prescribed in our Performance Factors specific responsibilities of this role include:

  • Client set up, which includes client specific policies and appropriate technical set up to meet contract objectives.
  • Monitoring and analyzing accuracy rates for coders/client
  • Reporting to clients: quarterly accuracy rates, turnaround time (AR days) and case mix improvement.
  • Resolution of reported client concerns.
  • Manage Coding Advocate, Coding Provider, and Coding Lead employees; including monitoring of quality, productivity, and training.
  • Determine client volumes for monthly invoicing of client.
  • Back up coding as necessary.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Maintain compliance with all Federal and State Laws and Regulations pertaining to the function of coding.
  • Abide by AHIMA Code of Ethics.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Manage budget.
  • Proactively recruit, screen, and select candidates for current and future resource requirements.
  • Effectively orient new hires to ensure a positive and productive employee engagement experience.
  • Ensure structure and hiring plans (within budget) are appropriate for performance and productivity levels required.
  • Utilize the company’s performance management program as designed to align individual performance to overall performance objectives.  Meet all completion requirements at a high-quality level.  Provide ongoing performance feedback.  Identify and take appropriate action for non-performance.
  • Ensure each employee has a yearly performance review that is reviewed with the employee and the review to be sent to Human Resources each year.
  • Ensure each employee has a clear and thorough understanding of their role and responsibilities.  Keep job descriptions current for each position.
  • Actively support and participate in organizational development and training programs.  Meet all completion requirements at a high-quality level.
  • Mentor, guide, and coach direct reports to expand their capabilities and performance.
  • Communicate all corporate matters in a positive and timely manner as directed by Corporate Communications or senior management. 
  • Administer all internal policies and procedures in accordance with corporate, human resources, budgetary, and finance guidelines.  Ensure accuracy of staff data records.
  • Comply with all employment laws and regulations including, but not limited to, equal employment opportunities for all.

Minimum Requirements:

Education/Experience/Certification Requirements

  • 4-year degree or equivalent health information leadership experience; AHIMA certification required. AAPC credential accepted with Health Information leadership experience.
  • Experience coding or managing coding services in a hospital or vendor environment.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to follow through on issues to resolution.
  • Must be able to act both independently and as a team member.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of HIM management experience
  • In depth understanding of ICD-10 and CPT coding rules and regulations
  • Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and make constructive suggestions for change.
  • Flexible, persuasive, and tactful
  • Demonstrated ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including upper management, line managers and operational personnel.
