Business & Legal Affairs, Compliance Manager

In a Nutshell //
The Business & Legal Affairs, Compliance Manager will be responsible for managing improper activity and related matters. Improper activity includes, but is not limited to, artificial streaming, policy circumvention, infringement and other types of misuse or abuse of systems and content. This role will manage disputes and escalated legal matters, help facilitate and/or conduct investigations as appropriate, while communicating professionally and diplomatically with our clients, Digital Service Providers (DSPs), third party claimants, and other stakeholders regarding these issues. Working alongside our Business & Legal Affairs, Rights Administration Manager, the Compliance Manager will be responsible for assisting in the development of policies and processes, mitigating and/or resolving improper activity related issues, prioritizing escalated matters, ensuring internal and external compliance with policies and processes, and other related matters as needed.
What you will do //
- Review, track, and process improper activity notices
- Communicate with Symphonic clients and other third parties regarding any and all types of improper activity notifications according to Symphonic’s policies and processes
- Track timelines for communications and responses within the established framework
- Develop and implement policy
- Investigate potential improper activity and related matters
- Collect, review, investigate and summarize documentation received in response to improper activity matters to ensure compliance
- Maintain, track, and store documentation and reporting for any and all improper activity and other types of notices received and communications regarding same
- Research client, client history, account information and other data necessary for decisionmaking on improper activity
- Maintain tracking of strike and termination notice related information
- Research and analyze trends and emerging law and industry practices related to copyright and other types of improper activity and actively contribute to the Legal team concerning same
- Complete other projects as identified by the Legal team
- Communicate and liaise with other internal stakeholders concerning Legal policies, processes and procedures
- Provide support on any escalated legal matters as they relate to improper activity or other legal related issues
- Brief General Counsel and Director of Business & Legal Affairs regularly and consistently on the status of improper activity related matters, findings and actions
- Prepare and compile information and responses to external parties concerning improper activity escalations, disputes, and litigation
What you need to have //
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Attention to detail
- Self-motivation
- Time-management abilities
- Passion about improper activity, fraud prevention, and related topics such as copyright law, DMCA, and AI issues and regulation; and excitement to continue learning and expanding knowledge in these areas to be a go to for knowledge and resources
- Passion about the legal aspects of the music industry, particularly independent distribution and the independent music space
- Positive attitude, works well, and is an active participant and communicator in a team-based environment
- High standard of ethics, ability to maintain confidential information
What would set you apart //
- Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is not necessary but would be super helpful!
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music Business, Marketing, Business, Law, or related fields
What would be the icing on the cake //
- Experience in improper activity, including artificial streaming and infringement
- Experience with Zendesk or similar Helpdesk software
- Experience with Monday.com Board applications and Excel
- A can-do attitude, willingness to tackle matters outside of core area of expertise

- This position works alongside the Business & Legal Affairs, Rights Administration Manager under the General Counsel and Director of Business & Legal Affairs on the Legal team at Symphonic
- This position is remote
- Applicants must reside in North Carolina, New York, or Tennessee to be eligible for this position
- Minimal travel may be required
Salary Range by location //
- NC & TN $58,656 to $76,252
- NY $64,350 to $83,655
