Job description

Lead Energy Storage Software Backend Engineer - Energy Trading
Location: FULLY REMOTE  (Anywhere in the USA)


This is an opportunity to join an industry leading renewable energy venture with strong private equity backing that is focused on the development, execution, and operations of dynamic utility-scale energy storage projects. They are at the forefront of the industry, have accumulated over 9GW of projects in a relatively short period of time, and are currently in an accelerated expansion phase which includes key additions to their Software, Data, and Technology Team.

The Lead Energy Storage Backend Software Engineer ia Principal Engineer level role on an innovative team focused on ML / AI energy predictive pricing and quantitative forecasting models that will drive the algorithmic decision making process of next generation utility-scale renewable energy projects across all ISO / RTO markets in the United States. It will be part of a creative team focused on energy storage / battery storage energy trading strategies, asset management, and real-time energy pricing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Renewables Lead Backend Software Engineer / Full-stack Developer - Develops and implements backend architecture (AWS, Python, CI/CD, SQL..) for utility-scale renewables projects operating in wholesale electricity markets with a key focus on energy storage initiatives
  • Renewables Lead Backend Software Engineer / Full-stack Developer - Drive the vision for technical strategies, defining the roadmap for feature development and system enhancements for energy storage, asset management, and energy trading initiatives
  • Renewables Lead Backend Software Engineer / Full-stack Developer - Utilizes forward thinking techniques to advocate for software engineering excellence through rigorous code quality, comprehensive testing, improved visibility, & observability practices
  • Renewables Lead Backend Software Engineer / Full-stack Developer Mentor and guide software engineers and data scientists, fostering technical growth within the team. 
  • Renewables Lead Backend Software Engineer / Full-stack Developer - Acts as a hands-on Technical Leader utilizing React, Node.js, Next.js to support the front end development of a sustainably expandable platform to be integrated battery storage systems
  • Renewables Lead Backend Software Engineer / Full-stack Developer acts as a Project Manager throughout the product development life cycle of an intelligent utility-scale renewables platform
  • Renewables Lead Backend Software Engineer / Full-stack Developer leads CI/CD DevOp pipeline management and API development initiatives  as part of a energy storage monetization and optimization platform


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 10+ years of experience in backend development, specializing in Python, AWS cloud solutions, and scalable, resilient systems for mission-critical applications.
  • Proven ability to lead technical initiatives, mentor teams, and deliver impactful solutions in collaboration with diverse, cross-functional teams.
  • Skilled in API development, integrating data science models, SQL, database design, and monitoring tools to ensure system reliability and transparency.
  • Knowledgeable in energy storage systems (BESS), infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation), functional programming, and Python data science libraries (pandas, NumPy, and scikit-learn).
  • Expertise in designing scalable, distributed systems for mission-critical applications, emphasizing transactional resilience, data integrity, and compliance-readiness.
  • Proficient in modern frameworks like Next.js and React, with the adaptability to learn and implement new technologies as needed.
  • Proven track record of leading technical initiatives from ideation to delivery, including managing timelines, setting clear expectations, and mentoring junior team members.
  • Competent in compliance-driven system architecture and engineering, ensuring audit readiness and robust system performance.
  • HUGE PLUS - experience working in production ready coding environments in the energy trading or financial trading sector
  • HUGE PLUS - solid understanding of national energy markets and renewable energy portfolios - PJM, ERCOT, SPP, MISO, NYISO, ISO-NE, and CAISO; capacity prices, regional energy pricing, congestion and curtailment analysis, transmission constraints, interconnection assessments, LMPs (locational marginal pricing), and/or regional supply and demand curves)
  • Ideal candidates for this role will have experience working in Senior, Lead, Principal Engineer roles as a Fullstack Engineer, Software Engineer, Back-end Engineer, Backend Software Engineer, Software Developer, Backend Developer....etc.
