Job description

Job Summary

The Jackson Laboratory invites applications for the position of Associate Computational Scientist in the Lee Lab, located at The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, CT. Under the guidance of senior scientists and directors, the successful candidate will engage in collaborative research aligned with our institutional strategy. This role involves contributing to pioneering projects across various biomedical disciplines, including evolutionary and cancer biology, human genetics, aging, immunology, and stem cell & developmental biology. The Associate Computational Scientist will support the research team and faculty in the Lee Lab, assisting interns, post-doctoral fellows, and scientists, as well as contributing to grant writing.

Successful candidates will have in-depth knowledge and experience in both short- and long-read High Throughput Sequence (HTS) data analysis, experimental design, data integration, algorithm and pipeline development, and programming skills in Python and/or R. They will also present research results to the JAX community, at conferences, and workshops. This role requires a proactive contributor who can work independently and as part of a team, providing overall project leadership, including project management, logistics management, scope definition, and collaboration management.

What You’ll Contribute

  • Conduct computational analysis of omics data, develop algorithms, and perform bioinformatics programming with minimal supervision.
  • Ensure data quality assurance and perform bioinformatics database mining.
  • Present research findings at international conferences and workshops.
  • Develop and refine pipelines, participate in departmental courses and workshops, and contribute to grant applications.
  • Mentor students and scientists, and disseminate research results within the JAX community and at professional gatherings.

What You’re Good At

  • A PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics, or a related field is required. Candidates nearing the completion of their PhD are also eligible to apply.
  • A minimum of 2-5 years of bioinformatics research experience, excluding the duration of PhD studies.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication, project management, and collaborative research.
  • A proven ability to contribute effectively to team projects and a commitment to ongoing collaborative efforts.
