Description
SUMMARY
The Managing Editor oversees content planning, development, writing, editing, and production for a B2B/member trade magazine and its website. This role includes lead generation, interviewing, writing, copyediting, and gathering multimedia content. The Managing Editor ensures content aligns with the publication’s style and editorial guidelines while collaborating with the editorial team, experts, and contributors to meet audience needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develop and determine editorial content for a B2B/member magazine, associated website, and multimedia platforms (including podcasts, videos, and webcasts), ensuring alignment with style, editorial policy, and publishing requirements. This includes ensuring content resonates with the target audience and meets their specific needs.
- Write, edit, assign, and manage feature articles, department content, captions, and multimedia, securing usage permission for photos (including cover photos).
- Establish editorial and production deadlines to ensure timely publication and distribution.
- Oversee all editing stages, including improving content structure, clarity, and accuracy, as well as grammar and consistency, to maintain editorial quality.
- Coordinate with the designers and graphics team to create the layout of the magazine, including design issues and article layouts.
- Collaborate with leadership to develop and manage the annual editorial calendar, aligning content with strategic goals, and partner with editorial leadership for future content and growth strategies.
- Recruit and collaborate with freelance writers on story assignments, providing support with research, sourcing, story angles, plot development, and draft revisions.
- Establish and maintain a network of industry contacts to stay informed on relevant issues and technologies.
- Coordinate with marketing and social media teams to increase audience engagement and optimize content reach, while monitoring audience engagement metrics to refine editorial strategies and optimize content relevance.
- Liaise with Editorial Advisory Group and technical advisors to ensure content aligns with industry standards and needs.
- Oversee reader outreach initiatives, including contractor awards, feedback programs, and represent the publication at industry events to build relationships and enhance visibility.
- Monitor industry trends to keep content relevant, competitive, and in line with audience interests.
- Contribute editorial expertise to other organizational projects, as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Must coordinate and supervise the work of freelance writers and contract technical editor.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
This role requires up to 25% travel, a valid driver’s license and passport are required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred in Journalism, English, or a related field
- College degrees may be substituted by a high school diploma, or equivalent, and 3-5 years’ experience.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in editing and writing, preferably in an industrial, construction, or technical field.
- Understanding of audience engagement strategies and analytics to optimize content development.
- Proficiency in editorial and project management tools to ensure efficient content creation and delivery.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, members, employees of the organization, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, etc. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to develop and interpret business graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
Must possess a specific level of communication skill both verbal and written. Have demonstrated personnel management skills including, but not limited to, the ability to evaluate staff performance and provide direction, is highly desirable. Ability to work in a multi-task environment taking into account various external factors and to communicate efficiently and accurately to both managers/supervisors and subordinate staff. Must be computer literate with knowledge and experience in word processing and spreadsheet softwares. Ability to learn and use association specific software.
