The Soil Scientist will examine and classify the physical characteristics of the soil to determine its suitability for a wide variety of crops. This position is based in the Northern part of South Africa (Free State, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, North West, and Limpopo).
Main Responsibilities
• Soil classification of orchards and/or fields
• Use Trimble appliance to log the georeferenced points
• GIS – QGIS: digitise the analysed soil physical properties
• Documenting the soil classification reports
• Feedback to farmers/clients
• Drafting of drainage layout
• Drafting of orchard designs
• Drafting of irrigation blocks based on the physical characteristics of the soil
• Indicate appropriate probe positions based on the physical characteristics of the soil
• Ad Hoc or other related duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
• BSc degree in Soil Science/Geology/Environmental Science
Experience
• Experience in GIS advantageous
• Experience in any crops advantageous
Other specific requirements
• Full professional proficiency in Afrikaans and English (speaking and writing)
• Must be willing to work every second Saturday (as required)
• Must be willing to travel extensively both locally and internationally
• Must own a pickup truck (bakkie)
• Must love the outdoors
• Must be willing to work long hours
• Should be willing to gain new scientific knowledge
This position is based in the Northern part of South Africa and preference will be given to candidates residing in one of the Northern provinces, as no relocation assistance will be provided.
