Job description

 
 

Position Summary

The Environmental, Health, & Safety (EHS) Director inspects and evaluates the environment, equipment, and processes in working areas to ensure compliance with government safety regulations and industry standards. The chief goal is to protect the employees, customers, and the environment.  

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Design and support programs to train employees and managers in all relevant laws, rules, and regulations, with special instruction for each type of employee as it relates to their specific position and responsibilities.
  • Address regulatory concerns and analyze activities at all facilities, including 13 US and Canadian facilities and 2 global facilities to ensure complete regulatory and statutory compliance, as well as any additional facilities added due to acquisition and / or organic growth. 
  • Establish a behavioral based safety culture that disseminates through every level of the organization.
  • Integrate EH&S focus into continuous improvement system and enable best in class safety standards and practices throughout the supply chain.
  • Remain up to date on all upcoming changes and prepare the organization to meet changing regulatory requirements.
  • Recommend changes to protect workers and educate employees on how to prevent health problems using safety training programs. 
  • Partner with local safety resources to drive initiatives in all company locations.  
  • As necessary, review and contribute to the following plans: Emergency Response (in tandem with Safety department), Chemical Approval Handling & Management, SPCC, SW3P, Lead based Paint Operations, Air Compliance/Air Permits, Water Conservation, Waste Minimization, Wetland Mitigation and Destruction Prevention, Hazardous Material Security Plan.
  • Coordinate safety and environmental audits and actions to remedy faults and remediate.
  • Consult with all departments to provide expertise and ensure compliance with standards, processes, permits and reporting.

 

Education and Experience:  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.      

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental health and safety, Engineering or related discipline.
  • Certified Safety Professional certification and Waste Water Treatment License preferred
  • Experience in an environmental or safety role with 10+ years of management/leadership experience.
  • Experience working in a continuous improvement/lean culture.
  • Experience working within MSHA and OSHA guidelines preferred.
  • Experience leading a behavioral based safety culture.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Knowledge of ISO/RC 14001 principles; and the ability to learn local and corporate EHSS systems.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Ability to hold self and others accountable; establish vision and plan to achieve; manage multiple projects; and interface with and represent the company to regulators.
  • Six Sigma and/or Lean Green Belt preferred.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English, bilingual in Spanish preferred.

  • Ability to work independently and be willing to travel 50-75%. Preference to candidates based in Hickory, NC although my live anywhere in the US.
  • Must be able to adapt to the noise level of a manufacturing setting, which is usually moderate to heavy.
