What We Can Achieve Together

The Lead Freshwater Scientist for Latin America provides technical and scientific support and leadership as a subject matter resource (SMR) for conservation initiatives in Conservation by Design (CbD), other conservation activities and measures of conservation success (MOS). The Lead Freshwater Scientist for Latin America advises conservation teams on designing and conducting science-based work to conserve freshwater ecosystems in the region. They may lead a program or project relative to conservation planning, research, and stewardship. They collaborate with other scientists and institutions to enhance Conservancy practices. They must work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

The Lead Freshwater Scientist for Latin America utilizes advanced knowledge, techniques, and practices to provide technical and scientific support and leadership for freshwater conservation work in Latin America. S/he formulates and conducts systematic problem area resolution of considerable scope and complexity, provides technical and scientific support and leadership as a subject matter resource (SMR) for Latin America freshwater conservation teams across all Conservancy Business Units in the region. This includes support in freshwater planning and development of science- based programs to measure conservation impact with emphasis on freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity. Participates in the planning and extension of theories, precepts, and practices in conservation science. Applies diversified knowledge of scientific principles and practices to broad variety of assignments and related fields. Advises conservation teams inside and outside the Conservancy on designing and conducting freshwater science based work, leads and manages a comprehensive program of freshwater conservation planning, research, and stewardship. Collaborates with other scientists and scientific institutions to enhance the Conservancy' s practices. Works closely with global and regional conservation staff and other conservation scientists inside and outside the Conservancy to coordinate service strategies and conservation approaches and integrate training needs and opportunities. Interfaces with other conservation strategies especially agriculture. Leads and/or participates on scientific publications, although not the major focus of this position.

What You'll Bring

  • PhD and more than 5 years experience on applied science on the field of freshwater ecology;
  • Knowledge on Latin America freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity characteristics;
  • Experience in conservation planning and developing monitoring and evaluation programs;
  • Experience in acquisition, manipulation, analyzing and interpreting statistical or environmental data;
  • Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals;
  • Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals;
  • Experience leading or participating on cross functional teams;
  • Experience managing complex projects including the financial aspect and coordinating the work of peers and partners;
  • Experience working and communicating (written and verbal) with a wide range of people and audiences;
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish or Portuguese languages (both will be a plus)

Other Desired Skills

  • Experience with freshwater spatial analysis using geographic information systems;
