Audience Editor

Gannett is seeking a journalist to focus on growing our base of loyal users at sites across our local network by collaborating with newsrooms to maximize existing platforms and devise ways of reaching new audiences.

This position will be part of a larger team of audience specialists who are embedded in local newsrooms and reporting to local leadership. These specialists are responsible for building brand awareness and loyalty across existing and developing platforms and aligning those efforts with broader content strategy objectives of each region.

This is the perfect role for a creative thinker with an analytical mind and a passion to serve local audiences well into the future.

Along with working with the team to distribute coverage and grow engagement across third-party platforms, this person will help identify trending topics on social, find and interview sources and pitch content for our platforms.

We're looking for someone who can come up with thoughtful features and projects and work with our team, as well as also reacting quickly to the news with day-turn stories.

This role is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii.

Responsibilities

  • Content Creation and Optimization: Working with regional editors to identify the top audience opportunities for those sites; oversee daily content production for social platforms in each region; ensure we’re creating and promoting high-quality and engaging materials that resonate with new audiences.
  • Newsletter Management: Own the entire newsletter creation process, from content development to distribution, ensuring newsletters are engaging and effective.
  • Audience Engagement: Facilitate and engage with readers through content optimization, product management and coverage contributions.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategies to build brand awareness and authority, increase audience loyalty, and grow audiences in line with broader content strategy objectives for each region. Collaborate with local editors, content strategy and audience leadership teams to devise and implement search strategies on key topics.
  • Own emerging platforms: As audiences and their needs shift, we will work with our newsroom leaders to ensure staff and resources are positioned to connect with users in new and innovative ways.
  • Performance Metrics: Monitor and analyze key metrics, including but not limited to search referrals, newsletter data and search rank on key coverage areas.

  • Increasing search rank for each market’s key coverage areas.
  • Increasing off-platform traffic in each market’s key coverage areas.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in content strategy and optimization.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS).
  • Ability to analyze and interpret performance metrics.
  • The ability to take big topics and themes and understand how to visualize them in ways that make them more accessible to audiences.
  • The ability to think quickly and calmly during live and breaking news events.
  • Ensures our coverage includes a diversity of ideas, perspectives, and voices.

The hourly rate for this role will range between $16.44 and $38.70. Variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, and union representation, if applicable.
