Blue Ridge Power (BRP) is seeking a Director, Substation Construction to join our team! The Director, Substation Construction, is responsible for supervising and technical support for the Substation Project Management and Construction groups for BRP. The Director is responsible for scheduling, labor estimating, construction management, construction crew support, and cost control supporting BRP projects. The Director is also responsible for developing and maintaining construction practices, commissioning, and labor relations. 

The Director, Substation Construction, reports directly to the VP, Electrical Construction. 

What You’ll Do: 

  • Plans, coordinates, assigns, and schedules station work tasks including engineering, material delivery, construction, and commissioning. 
  • Leads efforts in the development and implementation of standards for equipment, material, design, and construction requirements for transmission substations. 
  • Oversees the implementation of company work practices, project management, and tool selection for construction. 
  • Oversees development of station construction specifications, selection, evaluation of materials, and failure analysis to determine root cause. 
  • Provides input to budget development related to station design, labor, and material procurement for BRP estimators. Aids in cost variance analysis post-project completion to improve estimates. 
  • Works closely with other engineering groups within BRP to coordinate all aspects of solar and battery storage engineering and construction. 
  • Coaches, mentors, conduct performance reviews, and guides training/staff development. 
  • Interviews and evaluates candidates for employment and makes hiring recommendations. 
  • Approves expense statements and office leave requests. 
  • Actively participates in industry forums, conferences, and other company initiatives to support BRP's mission.
  • Support development group with utility questions and solutions to reduce overall project costs from utility interconnections.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Must-Haves: 

  • 10-15+ years of directly related electric utility engineering experience. 
  • 5+ years of leadership in a design engineering group. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electric system components and related communications and protection functions. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management, construction, and crew control for substation and transmission line construction. 
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, and developing employees in a team environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze performance, process improvements, and standardization activities. 
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written skills. 
  • Flexible and adaptable commercial agility; ability to reorder critical design projects based on new commercial requirements, under tight deadlines and sometimes changing requirements. 
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills. 

Education and Certifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or electrical engineering is required. 
  • Professional Engineer License or ability to retain is required. 
  • PMP or ability to retain is required. 
  • Must possess and maintain a current valid driver's license is required. 

Working Environment and Physical Demand: 

  • This position can be a remote position, preferably within comfortable traveling distance to one of our BRP office locations in Asheville or Fayetteville, NC.
  • Travel up to 25%. 
  • The position works in an office environment. 
  • Must possess reliable transportation.
  • May require lifting/carrying items up to 30 pounds.  
  • Must be able to sit/stand at a desk and utilize a computer, for extended periods.
