Job description

About The Position

The Principal Technologist, IT is a key senior-level technology partner with broad and comprehensive responsibility for conceptual technology design and implementation of technology solutions that support business needs and deliverables, leading to substantial and direct revenue/cost savings to the organization. The individual leads product and software design development and continually ensures design governance across projects that span multiple application platforms (including in-house solutions, modulating Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) applications and Software as a Service Application (SaaS)), as well as the infrastructure solutions that deliver full platform functionality that efficiently and effectively service key business processes.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as an individual contributor, while maintaining a high level of leadership and influence across groups.
  • Provide leadership and strong technical expertise in engineering and architecture efforts for technology solutions to support key business needs and deliverables; ensure design governance across projects, applications and infrastructure.
  • Lead product and software design and development across multiple technical teams; develop short- and long-term strategies and set project goals/milestones; guide problem analysis and requirements development; develop roadmaps and plans and track against such; lead build/buy decisions and vendor selection efforts; review and approve analysis, design and other work.
  • Assure design integrity for solutions delivered in production to the business, staff, faculty and students.
  • Lead technical presentations and address various topics including but not limited to technology in general, design work performed or to be performed, technical standards and best practices, industry trends and up-and-coming technology, methods, techniques, etc., retrospectives and lessons learned.
  • Assess/document existing design with respect to maintenance and stability of existing platforms; apply critical and strategic thinking to generate ideas that will lead to the next generation of platform designs supporting organization processes, staff, faculty and students.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and councils regarding technical and business-driven initiatives to develop and translate technical solutions to meet business needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or apparent.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 15 years of related IT experience OR Master’s Degree and 13 years of related IT experience OR 19 years of progressively responsible IT experience
  • Creation of deep technical solutions that are being/have been used by the business in production

Preferred Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to ideate future solutions and technical designs to meet critical business needs
  • Desire to build relationships and support teams across the organization
  • Comfort with Adobe products
  • Familiarity with technical modeling approaches (e.g., UML, E/R diagrams, flowcharting) and an ability to create effective diagrams and design documentation
  • Adaptive learning of complex technical systems
  • Organizational agility to drive execution
  • Creative approach to problem solving with a proven ability to focus on details
  • Excellent decision-making capabilities with the ability to balance theoretical solutions against achievable goals
  • Excellent team work skills and an ability to lead through influence
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with an ability to engage with the business on its own terms as well as with technical teams across various technical disciplines
  • If not already located in Arizona, the comfort of traveling to Phoenix for occasional meetings
