Under the broad direction of the Director of Editorial Services, and reporting to the Senior Communications Manager, the Proofing Manager/Writer-Editor’s mission is to contribute to the promotion of an accurate, compelling, and consistent institutional image and message in a variety of media. The Proofing Manager/Writer-Editor is an important player in the Office of External Affairs and its efforts to support Berklee in the achievement of its mission and strategic initiatives, with particular emphasis on increasing institutional visibility and developing a clear and unified promotional message. The Proofing Manager/Writer-Editor oversees proofing requests and is the first point of contact for incoming requests, assessing the requests and taking on or assigning the jobs as necessary. The Proofing Manager/Writer-Editor is proofreading and rewriting text for all materials. Projects include the full scope of college print and digital publications. The Proofing Manager/Writer-Editor provides the first and/or second proofreading review to a wide range of content—not just text—including video, audio, photos, and other digital materials. The Proofing Manager/Writer-Editor strives to maintain excellent customer service within the college community while ensuring that all materials are accurate, consistent, and effective toward meeting Berklee’s marketing needs. The Proofing Manager/Writer-Editor supports Berklee’s advancement, enrollment, and retention goals through writing and editing for a wide variety of college publications, including Berklee.edu, Berklee Now, Berklee Today, etc.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Oversees proofing services, delegating and managing all requests, and serving as main point of contact with content managers and college stakeholders who request proofing services.
  • Copy edit, rewrite, and, when necessary, fact-check, to ensure that written materials in print and on the web are of professional quality and reflect positively on Berklee.
  • Promote the college mission and strategic initiatives through copyediting and writing for a wide variety of college publications, which include, but are not limited to, fundraising publications, admissions publications, email marketing appeals, advertisements, press releases, concert posters, event listings, program books, Berklee.edu, Berklee Now, Berklee Today, newsletters, videos, podcasts, policy manuals, etc.
  • Work with web developers and designers during phases when CMS tools are created or updated. Monitor assigned website sections for accuracy and effectiveness of user experience.
  • Promote institution-wide diversity through attention to language in all written materials.
  • Maintain schedules as established by the Director of Editorial Services and Senior Communications Manager. Identify and report technical website issues impacting user experience and work collaboratively with website developers to communicate and help resolve such issues.
  • Whether working with faculty or staff on how to use a website feature or suggesting edits to a crucial letter to potential donors, be a resource that improves the writing and content creation skills of any and all Berklee faculty, students, and staff.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and organizations reflecting a broad range of identities, perspectives & experiences.
  • At least three years experience of editing and proofreading experience in print and/or online media.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or the equivalent required.
  • Experience working with and editing the work of other writers.
  • Experience with preprint production; knowledge of print process; understanding of graphic design elements.
  • Experience with a variety of computer applications in the Apple Macintosh environment, plus content management systems such as Drupal and WordPress.
  • Knowledge of basic HTML, Photoshop, Google Analytics, Adobe Acrobat, MailChimp, all major social media, and the ability/eagerness to learn new systems and media technologies quickly.
