Your mission
The Africa Data Team Lead will lead a talented team of data scientists in delivering cutting-edge insights on jobs and labor markets in Africa. This role involves managing projects end-to-endâfrom understanding client needs to delegating tasks and ensuring the highest quality of analytical outputs. The Team Lead will also represent WDL at high-profile conferences and meetings, making this a role that combines technical expertise, leadership, and external engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
Translate client needs into actionable project plans, ensuring that tasks are effectively delegated to team members.
Provide strategic direction for data-driven analysis and model development, aligned with client objectives and WDLâs mission.
Team Management:
Lead and mentor a diverse team of data scientists, fostering an environment of growth and collaboration.
Manage team members on an HR level, including performance evaluations, promotions, and addressing disciplinary matters.
Oversee workflows, ensuring adherence to best practices in collaborative coding and version control (e.g., GitHub).
Technical Oversight:
Critically review the teamâs work, ensuring code quality, analytical rigor, and methodological robustness.
Provide hands-on guidance for advanced coding and data analysis in Python and/or R.
Ensure compliance with WDLâs standards for reproducible research and transparency.
Client and Stakeholder Engagement:
Serve as the primary point of contact for WDLâs major multinational donor in this project, building trust and ensuring alignment of deliverables with client expectations.
Represent WDL at international conferences, workshops, and donor meetings, showcasing the organizationâs thought leadership in data science and labor economics.
