We are looking for a Real Time Trader to join our team who is responsible for managing the wholesale power position for a large Alberta utility. The decisions and strategies your team make will be implemented daily with a direct and measurable effect on the bottom line.

Real time traders help optimize ENMAX’s generation portfolio while managing/hedging the company’s exposure to real-time market conditions.  Rotating through both a day and night schedule, you will implement ENMAX’s price/dispatch strategy by offering our units into the Alberta Interconnected Electrical System (AIES) through the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO).   You will also hedge any exposures by importing/exporting physical power as well as monitor our assets for compliance to various regulatory requirements.  


Major Responsibilities:

  • Dynamically optimize all corporate positions and assets

  • Develop price forecasts through analyzing short- and medium-term power market fundamentals

  • Analyze data to look for profitable physical/financial trading strategies

  • Develop and maintain models used for market analysis and generation optimization

  • Submit offers for generation facilities to the AESO to optimize our position, reduce costs and maximize revenue

  • Act as the point of contact between ENMAX generation facilities and internal/external stakeholders

  • Maintain compliance with ENMAX limits, policies and applicable market regulation, rules and laws

  • Monitor market fundamentals and report on developments to other internal stakeholders, including internal generation availability

  • Create market forecasting reports and distribute/present to internal groups

  • Provide weekend/holiday gas trading and balancing coverage for ENMAX’s gas trading desk

  • Provide training/mentoring/coaching for new real time traders as well as provide backup coverage for the desk in the event it is required

Qualifications & Experience:

  • University degree – Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, Finance or Business

  • 2+ years of experience in a trading/analyst role

  • Strong programming experience and knowledge of Excel, SQL, VBA

  • Proficiency in another programming language (i.e. Python) or experience with Data Bricks for analytics is considered a strong asset

  • Strong statistical and quantitative abilities and/or data management skills

Location:  This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
