Title: Freelance News Writer, Morning/Weekends (Parade.com)

Employment type: Contract (40 hours per week)

Location: Remote USA

First Look: Freelance News Writer, Morning/Weekends (Parade.com)

Parade is seeking an entertainment- and pop culture-obsessed individual with a keen eye for trending news to expand our morning and weekends coverage. The ideal candidate will have proven editorial experience covering entertainment/pop culture news and trending topics. As part of the weekend and morning teams, you will pitch and write trending news stories, including ones found on social media, via podcasts, television shows and more. If hired, you must produce clean copy with the ability to self-publish when necessary. Please demonstrate through your application: a sharp eye for stories that will “pop off,” the ability to craft headlines that will get clicks, and a deep knowledge of SEO best practices.

Please note: This is a 40-hour-per-week contract position. You will work with the team during the following shifts: 7 a.m.-3 p.m. ET Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 2-10 p.m. ET Saturdays and Sundays. You’ll also be required to staff the news desk for special events such as the Emmys and other awards shows and fulfill shifts during holiday periods. Your shifts may be adjusted as necessary to accommodate such events.

The Arena Group’s expected hourly pay rate range for this position is currently $25-$35 per hour. Actual pay may vary based on multiple factors including education, location, experience and other factors permitted by law. Due to the volume of applications we receive, only applicants selected for consideration will be contacted.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop stories that will meet audience and traffic goals

  • Use analytics & research tools such as Google Analytics, Google Trends, Parsley, etc. to monitor story performance, and adjust strategy accordingly

  • Find and pitch stories that are timely and exciting to the Parade audience

  • Quickly write clean copy with the ability to pull photos and input into a CMS

  • Pitch in to edit stories when needed and feel comfortable self-publishing if necessary

What You’ll Bring:

  • Minimum of three years of experience working in a fast-paced digital environment, preferably in entertainment/pop culture news, required

  • Experience reporting original news, interviewing, and sourcing

  • Knowledge of digital content best practices, SEO, and audience development tactics

  • Excellent communication, organization, leadership, and time management skills

  • A collaborative and team-oriented mindset, with a sense of fun, urgency, and a can-do attitude
