Responsibilities

  • Strategic Data Architecture & Design:
  • Define, implement, and continuously refine scalable, cost-effective data architectures that meet current and future business needs.
  • Identify opportunities to adopt off-the-shelf solutions or build custom tools where they confer a clear competitive edge.
  • Establish and enforce standards for data modeling, data governance, and system design.


Leadership & Team Development:

  • Lead and mentor a team of data engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, learning, and innovation.
  • Provide technical guidance, set performance goals, and support professional development.
  • Promote best practices in DataOps, testing, and quality assurance, ensuring the team delivers reliable and well-structured data pipelines.


Data Engineering Lifecycle Management:

  • Oversee and implement data ingestion pipelines from diverse source systems, evaluating batch vs. streaming approaches.
  • Implement and optimize storage solutions (data warehouses, data lakehouses) for performance, security, and cost control.
  • Implement and maintain reliable, high-performance transformation processes, ensuring consistent application of business logic.


DataOps & Governance:

  • Champion DataOps principles to improve collaboration, observability, incident reporting, and continuous delivery of data solutions.
  • Uphold data governance policies to ensure data quality, discoverability, and compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Drive the implementation of robust data models, master data management, and data integrity measures.


Software Engineering & Orchestration:

  • Write, review, and guide the team's production-grade code, leveraging frameworks and best practices in orchestration, automation, workflow management, software design patterns, and industry best practices.
  • Employ testing, debugging, and software design patterns to maintain a stable and extensible data platform.
  • Pioneer efforts to integrate emerging technologies and frameworks that improve the data engineering ecosystem.


Cross-Functional Collaboration & Business Alignment:

  • Work closely with data analysts, data scientists, and other stakeholders to understand and translate high-level requirements into practical, scalable data solutions to ensure data solutions meet critical business needs.
  • Communicate architectural decisions, trade-offs, and opportunities to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Shape the data strategy, influencing tools and approaches that deliver measurable business value.


Must Have’s

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with a focus on cloud-based solutions.
  • Experience with cloud-based data warehouses (AWS, Google, Azure, etc), including cluster management, schema design, and optimizing query performance through various keys (distribution & sort) and compression.
  • Experience in implementing, managing, and maintaining (ELT, ETL) data pipelines, integrating structured & unstructured data from various sources into a cloud data storage.


Technical Expertise:

  • Strong understanding of data engineering fundamentals, including data lifecycle stages: generation, storage, ingestion, transformation, and serving.
  • Knowledge of data architecture design, distributed systems, and modern data platforms (data warehouses, data lakes, data lakehouses).
  • Experience with Data Architecture, DataOps practices, data governance, data quality, and security.
  • Experience with embedded analytics and multitenancy
  • Advance SQL skills
  • Stored procedures (e.g. for batch processing)
  • Window functions (e.g. OVER, ROW_NUMBER)
  • Query optimization (e.g. CTE's, or EXPLAIN)
  • Experience with Python
  • Ability to design for scalability, performance, cost, and agility while maintaining simplicity and reliability.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Understanding of Agile, DevOps, and continuous learning cultures.


Leadership Skills:

Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects.

Strong communication skills to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Problem Solving:

Analytical mindset with the ability to solve complex data challenges.

A proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks in data projects.

Nice to Have:

Experience with PHP

Familiarity with some key data integration tools and ETL/ELT frameworks aside from AWS (ie- dbt, Prefect, Airtable, Tableau)

Familiarity with graph databases and other emerging technologies

Experience teaching or guiding team members to help understand data architecture.

Compensation:

The typical starting salary range for this position is: $145,000-160,000.

The actual salary offer will consider multiple factors, including skills, experience, education, and location. Please note that the salary reflects the base amount only and does not include total compensation, such as discretionary bonuses and benefits.
