THOR Solutions, LLC is seeking a highly skilled
Senior Marine Structural Engineer to join a program supporting the design and modeling of the U.S. Navy’s Constellation class Guided-Missile Frigates (FFG62). This position requires extensive experience in structural engineering for marine applications, including proficiency in ShipConstructor software and familiarity with ship design standards for military, Coast Guard, or commercial vessels. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in structural design, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to delivering high-quality results on complex projects.
Typical Responsibilities:- Support the structural design and modeling of ship hulls, including primary and secondary structures, for the U.S. Navy's FFG62 program.
- Utilize ShipConstructor software to create and improve detailed 3D models, production drawings, and design documentation.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including other engineers and modelers, to ensure design accuracy and integration across systems.
- Perform structural analyses to ensure compliance with applicable military and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) standards and regulatory codes.
- Review and provide feedback on designs, technical reports, and specifications from junior engineers, modelers, and subcontractors.
- Evaluate material selections, fabrication methods, and structural performance to optimize design efficiency and durability.
- Support technical discussions with shipyard, Navy, and other stakeholders, addressing structural concerns and presenting design solutions.
Location: Fully remote available within most CONUS locations. An ideal candidate will be local near THOR offices in Virginia Beach, VA and be able to support partial onsite time.
Secret Security Clearance Eligibility Preferred: This position does not require an active security clearance, but an active DoD Secret security clearance or eligibility for a DoD Secret security clearance is highly preferred.
Typical Physical Requirements: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Around 10% travel for visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.
Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- At least eight (8) years of recent, relevant professional experience in structural design for ship and marine platforms.
- An ideal candidate will have obtained this experience in a US Navy, Coast Guard, or commercial shipyard environment.
- Strong knowledge of structural analysis techniques and tools, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Familiarity with relevant standards and codes, including those from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and U.S. Navy specifications.
- Proficiency with ShipConstructor, SolidWorks, or similar 3D modeling software. Familiarity with CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Rhino, or CATIA) preferred.
- An ideal candidate will possess a Professional Engineer (PE) license or other relevant engineering or design certifications.
- Demonstrated experience supporting or managing complex ship design projects and mentoring junior engineers.
- Proficient with common productivity software such as the Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Acrobat.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
