Job Title: Flight Operations Performance Engineer

Department: Flight Operations

Work Arrangement: This role is primarily based in the office environment with occasional work-from-home flexibility

 

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Chief Pilot, the Flight Operations Performance Engineer is responsible for supporting aircraft performance, weight & balance, flight planning, fuel efficiency, and dispatch systems development. This role also involves coordinating with relevant departments to provide technical input, manage engineering projects, and address the day-to-day operational needs of the airline.


Primary Job Functions:

Performance Engineering & Compliance:

  • Provide performance engineering support to address challenges, ensuring operational safety, efficiency, and compliance with Transport Canada regulations.
  • Conduct takeoff and landing performance, route mission analysis, and identify key operational risks, ensuring compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor aircraft performance degradation and manage updates of the performance factors in the flight planning system and the FMC across the fleet. 

System & Tool Management:

  • Support the Boeing Operational Performance Tool (OPT), ensuring data integrity and regular updates, particularly for NOTAM issuance and performance penalties related to takeoff, enroute, and landing.
  • Coordinate with the Boeing OPT team to troubleshoot issues and develop solutions that enhance functionality for Dispatch and Flight Crews.
  • Support administration and maintenance of the company’s Weight & Balance program, including aircraft weight updates and conducting weight and center of gravity analysis as required.

Operational Support & Monitoring:

  • Work directly with Dispatch to ensure accurate and efficient flight profiles.
  • Support the fuel management program and implementation of fuel-saving initiatives. Monitor fuel consumption and investigate potential issues. 
  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Engineering team on analyzing performance degradation trends and implementing mitigation initiatives.
  • Support the administration of the navigation database, ensuring its completeness and operational relevance.

Project & Safety Initiatives:

  • Assist the Flight Operations department in route and network analysis.
  • Work with the Chief Pilot, technical pilots, Dispatch and other departments on projects and technologies to improve safety, efficiency, and reduce costs within the fleet and Flight Operations.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical input to operational documentation such as COM, FCOM, and MEL.
  • Communicate findings clearly across all levels, from senior leadership to peers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional departments to design and execute projects that minimize operational costs and enhance efficiency
  • Perform other duties as assigned. Responsibilities may evolve due to changing circumstances, including emergencies, shifts in workload, or technical developments.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education: 
    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience required.
  • Experience: 
    • Five (5) Seven (7) years of experience in flight operations engineering or aircraft performance, with a focus on performance challenges and safety compliance.
    • Prior experience with aircraft performance, weight and balance, and airline operations, particularly with Boeing 737 or similar aircraft.
    • Demonstrated ability to assess takeoff, landing performance, and route mission analysis, identifying and mitigating operational risks.
    • Knowledge of Transport Canada regulations (CARs) and their application in flight operations.
    • Experience with performance tools, such as the Boeing PET and OPT, and working with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and enhance flight planning systems.
    • Familiarity with fuel burn monitoring and fuel-saving initiatives.
    • Experience with operational documentation (e.g., COM, AFM, FCOM) and contributing to technical updates.
    • Prior involvement with safety management systems (SMS) and supporting safety-related investigations and corrective actions.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Proficiency with flight planning systems, and performance tools like the Boeing PET and OPT.
    • Strong technical and analytical skills to monitor aircraft performance, assess risk, and provide corrective actions.
    • Ability to support and maintain the Weight & Balance program, including managing aircraft weight updates and addressing related delays.
    • Excellent collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across departments (Flight Ops, Maintenance, IT, Airports) and with senior leadership.
    • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly communicate findings and recommendations to various stakeholders.
    • Ability to work irregular hours and adapt to changes in workload and technical developments.
    • Experience working with Flight Operations Quality Assurance to monitor and improve departmental effectiveness.
    • Proactive approach to safety, with the ability to identify and mitigate operational risks.

  • Requirements: 
    • Clear criminal record check and satisfactory employment references.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC).
