Job description

Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Closes 2 February 2025

Summary
Are you the Humanitarian Impact Institute's (HII's) first COO?

This is not just another operations role. HII aims to increase humanitarian and development impact globally. To do that, we need operational excellence across all our support functions and early stage initiatives.

As the COO at HII you will be a hands-on developer of HR, IT, legal, risk/safety systems, procedures and sometimes people, as well as managing our early stage initiatives and serving as our PMO lead.

Success in this role will require a collaborative leadership approach and the ability to work seamlessly between the detail and the strategic.

Job Description
As HII's COO you will be responsible for formalising the foundations of the organisation to empower the growth in people and impact we are planning for 2025-2028. By 2028 we expect to have tripled in personnel and be driving impact across all humanitarian and development industry sectors and sub-sectors globally.

The COO's role is to ensure our people and systems are supporting that growth.

In addition, the COO will be the hands-on manager of HII's early stage initiatives, which at the moment include GEN2030 and our Training Institute.

This is a high paced and high reward role, suited to somebody at a career stage that is looking for a breakthrough opportunity and has the energy to support this type of growth.

More specifically, the role involves:
  • Building industry-leading corporate support systems across HR, IT, safety & security, carbon accounting and our offices.
  • Professionalising our project management systems and PMO so that internal and external personnel and partners have everything they need in advance to deliver their work to time, quality and budget expectations.
  • Leading our marketing together with colleagues across HII to deliver high quality publications and marketing that look great, inspire and have an impact.
  • Hands-on management of our early stage initiatives (which currently include GEN2030, our Training Institute) and implementation of refinements to our service delivery models.
  • Become the learning champion - the person who operates our full cycle learning system and ensures that learning translates into operational improvements.
The COO has a lot of autonomy in this role, but is expected to work collaboratively alongside other areas of the organisation including technical teams, commercial teams and the CEO (who will be leveraging your role to enable them to have an increased focus on technical quality/impact, strategy and establishing new technical teams). In some of the functions described above you will have staff or external support, in others you will be the hands-on 'doer' - with that configuration changing as we grow.

Requirements
As a minimum you must have a university degree, be based in Ireland with the permanent right to work in Ireland - this is a permanent role in Ireland.

Beyond that, we do value years of experience and at least some humanitarian industry exposure - however just as valuable is:
  • a demonstrated track record of collaborative leadership in a medium-sized organisation;
  • a broad background in corporate support areas;
  • enthusiasm for managing the challenges of rapid growth; and
  • a drive to help HII succeed in its mission.

Benefits
This is a full-time permanent role in a social impact-focused organisation.

You can work from home most of the time, but your presence in our Dublin office is required two days per month (or more if you prefer).

The starting salary range is EURO 55,000 to 65,000 gross with statutory employment conditions, the ability to purchase additional annual leave, pension and employer health insurance.

We are looking for someone who wants a career building opportunity to grow professionally as we grow in size and impact.
