Your Role
An opportunity has arisen for a National Fleet Engineer based in Chelmsford, Essex. The National Fleet Engineer is responsible for overseeing all aspects of vehicle engineering and fleet management for the company's commercial vehicles. This role includes strategic planning and execution of the vehicle replacement programme, all fleet maintenance activities along with some advisory involvement in forklift specification for procurement purposes.
The job holder will manage and ensure the efficient operation of maintenance workshops across five ADM locations. This includes supervising the local teams plus one field-based vehicle examiner and the external maintenance providers.
In addition, this role involves the administration and compliance of the company’s Operators’ Licence across five traffic areas, including managing DVLA Road Fund Licensing.
This position serves as the primary point of contact for vehicle manufacturers, tyre suppliers and diesel fuel providers to ensure colleague safety, legal compliance, optimal fleet performance and cost-effectiveness.
Your Responsibilities
- Conduct safety and health audits / reviews with each vehicle workshop and vehicle examiner to ensure compliance.
- Manage the company’s Operator Licence and administration tasks to maintain adherence to regulatory standards.
- Ensure maintenance facilities meet statutory requirements and are kept up to date.
- Specify and procure new vehicles and equipment to meet safety, compliance and performance requirements.
- Formulate and manage the vehicle replacement and refurbishment programme, including capital expenditure requests, to optimise lifecycle of the fleet, cost efficiency and operational continuity.
- Monitor fleet performance metrics including fuel consumption, maintenance costs and vehicle utilisation to drive improvements and ensure cost effective operations.
- Negotiate and manage external contracts for vehicles, fuel, lubricants, tyres and automotive products to ensure cost control while maintaining high standards of quality and performance.
- Co-ordinate and optimise the movement of equipment between locations to minimise cost and ensure efficiency.
- Respond to and manage any vehicle compliance issues (i.e PG9) and ensure robust corrective actions.
- Oversee fleet risk management and sustainability initiatives including accident investigations, driver safety programmes and decarbonisation projects.
- Maintain a regular dialogue with trade and professional bodies as well as current and potential vehicle suppliers to ensure that the company has the benefit of technical innovation that will assist its competitive position.
- Assist in the overall effectiveness of the distribution and operations function by providing operating guidance on equipment use; introducing operating procedures, conducting operational audits and operator training.
Your Profile
- The candidate must hold engineering degree or equivalent
- Have demonstrable experience within vehicle engineering environment
- Must hold vehicle engineering qualifications
- Be a Member of a professional institute (Institute of Road Transport Engineers)
