Job description

Go-Ahead London is the capital’s largest bus operator, employing over 8,000 colleagues across 17 garages and Head Office, mostly based in Southeast, Southwest, Northeast, and East London. We are an award-winning company with highly regarded reputation and most of our colleagues are professional Bus Drivers, responsible for safely delivering millions of passengers every year.

Principal responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following as you will be expected to carry out any appropriate duties at the request of your line manager.

  • Responsible for the allocation of work and duties to the engineering team to ensure that there are sufficient vehicles to provide the required service.
  • Responsible for ensuring the engineering team effectively and efficiently deliver the planned and unplanned maintenance and ensuring that all vehicles wheels are checked and torqued.
  • Responsible for ensuring on a daily basis that the PVR (Peak Vehicle Requirement) is delivered and effectively managed, this is likely to involve a cooperative approach with the Operations Teams.
  • Responsible for reviewing the vehicles and allocating a status to each vehicle ensuring that unsafe and unfit vehicles do not enter service and logging any mileage that may be lost, this will include highlighting any specific mileage challengers that may arise.
  • Undertake frequent and regular reviews of the facilities and workshop, this will include general housekeeping and reporting of any facilities issues and defects.
  • Ensure that any visitors or contractors who are working in the engineering department have the necessary and required permits to work and supervise any engineering contractors working within the department.
  • Responsible for carrying out quality checks on all vehicles ensuring that they meet both the DVSA and company standards.
  • Manage the workshop engineers who are working during the night shift ensuring that they have the skills and ability to carry out their role. This will include performance management and ensuring that the time at work is effect and productive.


It is essential that you have prior experience of managing a team of engineers and are capable of motivating colleagues and ensuring they are willing to work with you to deliver the required vehicle maintenance. There may be times when you may be required to work under pressure without close supervision and we are looking for you to show initiative and flexibility. You will be a proficient user of the Microsoft office suite and an ability to quickly learn the technologies that are unique to our business. Ideally you will be a member of the IRTE or hold another relevant professional qualification and an interest in emerging technologies and electric vehicles would be an advantage.
