Job description

The Regional Sanitation Manager (RSM) is responsible for assisting, developing and directing the Sanitation program and for insuring that all current Food Safety Standards are being met throughout the platform. The RSM will provide the technical support in sanitation excellence to assure reduction in microbiological and chemical risk reduction and product contamination. Regional Sanitation Manager will provide training and development of plant sanitation employees and management. Through auditing the RSM will identify risk and provide guidance to control sanitation and GMP issues and to enforce all current food safety standards. As appropriate to the issue, RSM will be responsible for communicating in a clear manner any Sanitation deviations or risk to the Director of Food Safety and Sanitation and Regional Director of Quality, Plant Manager, Quality Manager, Maintenance Manager, Business Unit Manager, Shipping Manager, and Plant Sanitation Staff.

Job Duties :

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide guidance and assist in the development of and maintenance of Sanitation program (MSS, daily sanitation, SSOPs, HACCP, Allergen, etc.) for a variety of products in compliance with customer and government regulations.
  • Works with Regional and Plant Safety Managers to ensure safe working conditions
  • Assists with consumer complaint issues and leading plant teams in the direction necessary to minimize complaints.
  • Monitors plant sanitation KPIs for trends that may impact the safety of products
  • Works with Continuous Improvement to develop and sustain more efficent ways of working while maintaining product safety
  • Participate in Kaizen events as subject matter expert
  • Assists with the development of Sanitation standard work procedures and paperwork.
  • Must build strong working relationship with Plant Managers and Quality Managers.
  • Work with the Quality Manager in identifying sanitation or regulation issues at assigned facilities.
  • Supports plant sanitation management in preparation for Third Party or Customer inspections by conducting audits of paperwork and facility.
  • Assists with policy, procedures and paperwork to ensure that all Regulatory, Company and Customer standards are achieved in assigned plants.
  • Provides an atmosphere that allows for the development of supervisors and managers.
  • Audits and refines Master Sanitation Schedule and attendant KPIs for assigned facilities.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining the Sanitation budgets.
  • Manages and escalates issues with Sanitation chemical and pest control suppliers.
  • Works with the Plant Quality Manager and Sanitation management to identify and correct sanitation or environmental issues at assigned facility.
  • Ensures that all chemicals used in the plant are approved for such use and that all chemicals have current SDS and label information on site.
  • Responsible oversight of the pest control program for assigned facilities.
  • Other duties as identified or assigned by Director of Food Safety and Sanitation.

Required Competencies & Knowledge :

Knowledge of:

  • Master Sanitation Plan implementation (Sanitation Prerequisite Programs, Sanitation Preventive Controls, GMPs) and other legal requirements for the food industry
  • Must have working knowledge in the sanitation requirements of FDA and USDA.
  • Must have working knowledge in GMP’s, HACCP, Allergens and Environmental Monitoring
  • Must have working knowledge in GFSI auditing schemes: BRC and SQF.
  • Must be familiar with chemical and microbiological measures used for verification and validation of sanitation, e g., allergen free and microbiologically sanitary.
  • Must understand the 10 principles of sanitary equipment design.
  • Must understand and be able to implement the 7 steps of dry and wet sanitation
  • Pest control measures in a dry and wet food processing environments
  • Good understanding of commercial food processing equipment.
  • Must have some understanding of OSHA requirements

Skill in:

  • Demonstrated good record in developing and maintaining programs and handling conflicts with positive and practical attitude.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, computer literate, self-motivated and able to make sound business decisions.
  • Excellent motivational and people skills.

Ability to:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, analytical ability, leadership strength and ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment
  • Make sound business decisions.
  • Travel extensively (60%) regionally and nationally by car and air

Proficiency in : MS Office Suite

Work Environment :

  • It is expected that the RSM will be on the production floor during a portion of the sanitation cycle at plant level. Work is primarily done on the production floor with occasional office setting.
  • Work will involve overnight activities
  • Environment may be wet, cold, hot and humid in production areas.
  • Production environment exposure which includes noise, dust, moving machinery, fork lifts, and fluctuations in temperature.
  • Office setting on a daily basis.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • 5 plus years experience in food industry with at least 5 years as a Sanitation Manager.
