At Leonardo, we have an exciting opportunity for a Systems Engineering Summer Placement to join our team within the Customer Support and Service Solutions (CS3) line of business.
The CS3 line of business operates across the UK, providing innovative and invaluable support solutions to our customers. We help to ensure the availability of front-line capability wherever and whenever required.
We also have Engineering Summer Placement roles available in our Electronic Warfare and Future Combat Air lines of business, which are based out of the Luton site. For these roles you will be involved in a variety of tasks in one of the following engineering disciplines – Software, Systems, Mechanical, Hardware, Firmware, Microwave or Antenna Engineering. The eight-week Summer Placement Programme
We have created a programme across our UK sites that not only increases your technical skills, but gives you the opportunity to work on meaningful real life projects, alongside experienced engineers and graduates across our business.
You will receive coaching and support to achieve your personal goals and work in multidisciplinary teams to gain as much experience across the engineering lifecycle from your time in industry as possible. Our ultimate aim is to see you through your undergrad years and successful placements will result in an offer to return for further placements or for an offer on our Graduate Development programme.
This programme is remunerated £25,000 per annum.
What you will do as a Systems Engineering Summer Placement (Customer Support)
You will be part of a team working alongside leading engineers, using new technology to solve customer problems. You will be engaging with a wide variety of stakeholders to understand their needs at all stages of the engineering lifecycle.
There are several Systems Engineering Summer Placement roles available in CS3 – your role will be in one of the following three areas:
Support Solution Design: Conceptual design and development of new support solutions and services, including those for transformational RAF and Army programmes and Team Tempest
Technical Support: Hands-on testing and repair of some of our in-service equipment, across helicopters and fast jets. You will be able to work on electronic-based systems, as well as associated test equipment
Digital: Application of digital tools and methodologies to help understand how our equipment performs when it is being used by our customers, and how effective our support solutions are
As part of the application process, you will have the opportunity to explore which area would be the best fit for you. To further aid your development, you will also be taking part in a project with other early careers individuals, focused on developing an innovative engineering solution for CS3.
Throughout your Summer Placement, you will receive coaching and support from your team, including our dedicated CS3 Early Careers Manager, to achieve your objectives as well as your personal development goals. You will gain a wide array of experience on your placement that you can apply to your academic studies and future career.
This is an eight-week placement, based out of our Luton site. Leonardo also operates a Custom (hybrid) working model that allows our employees to split their time between attending the workplace and working remotely.
Key Responsibility Areas
Develop and apply your academic knowledge to undertake various activities across the engineering lifecycle, delivering to agreed performance targets, including cost and schedule.
Work closely with engineers across multiple disciplines to solve problems.
Develop practical skills in engineering design, development and verification for complex solutions, understanding key processes and technologies.
Complete tasks to a high standard and in accordance with appropriate processes and procedures.
Take an active role in engineering process improvement.
Skills, Qualifications and Knowledge Required
We would like to hear from you if you have a combination of the following:
Ongoing undergraduate or postgraduate course in a relevant discipline, including Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or other STEM subject.
Passionate about engineering
Self-motivated with an aptitude for problem solving and an ability to drive difficult issues to conclusion
Able to work with minimum direction or supervision on complex tasks
Able to apply big-picture thinking to look at problems as a whole
Strong collaboration and inter-personal skills, and the ability to interact with subject matter experts regarding a range of technical and operational topics
Confidence and ability to challenge and respond to technical or process issues
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience of creating documentation and presentations
Able to plan, prioritise and deliver high quality work
Qualifications
All of our Summer Placement roles require you to be currently studying a relevant degree discipline such as Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or other STEM subject degrees.
Please note that in order to apply for this opportunity you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as “SC”) for our business which includes having a minimum of five years permanent residency in the UK.
