Senior Manager, Software Engineering – Platforms

The Role

We are seeking a seasoned Senior Manager of Software Engineering to lead our Platforms team. In this role, you will manage both a team of engineers and other engineering managers, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and reliable platform services. You will be responsible for setting the technical direction for the platform, driving architectural decisions, and overseeing projects that align with Solera’s strategic goals. This position requires a combination of technical acumen and leadership skills to foster collaboration, innovation, and growth within the team.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage and mentor a diverse team of senior and principal engineers, as well as engineering managers, building a culture of high performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee platform development projects, ensuring they align with Solera’s technical standards, and drive both direct team contributions and the work of subordinate managers.
  • Lead the development and evolution of core platform services, making architectural decisions that ensure scalability, security, and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, data science, QA, and operations, to define and prioritize platform initiatives that support business objectives.
  • Balance operational stability with the delivery of new features, managing project timelines, resource allocation, and technical debt.
  • Advocate for best practices in software engineering, promoting agile methodologies, code quality, and CI/CD processes.
  • Represent the platform's technical vision to senior leadership and other stakeholders, influencing company-wide engineering strategies and initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation, driving the adoption of new tools, technologies, and methodologies to enhance the platform’s capabilities.
  • Support the professional development of team members through coaching, mentorship, and career development opportunities.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 1-2 years managing other managers and direct engineering teams.
  • Extensive experience overseeing platform architectures in a cloud environment (AWS, Azure), with a strong background in distributed systems, microservices, and full-stack development.
  • Proven ability to manage large-scale projects, balancing technical excellence with business priorities, and ensuring timely, high-quality delivery.
  • Strong expertise in agile development methodologies and best practices, with a demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing engineering teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience. Advanced degree preferred.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with IoT, telematics, machine learning, or related technologies within platform engineering.
  • Experience in the transportation, automotive, or insurance industries.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence across all levels of the organization.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, with a passion for keeping up with industry trends and emerging technologies.
