Team Description & Purpose of Role
The Core Engineering team is responsible for maintaining, reviewing, and implementing architectural and functional changes within the GTT IP Network. Owners of projects for the proper functioning of all IP systems including the maintenance, support, upgrade, patching, and retirement of such systems. Proactively reviews current architecture and capabilities, tests and evaluates new IP technologies, and implementing improvements.
The team maintains a high level of technical IP proficiency and function as an escalation point for complex issues and advanced troubleshooting as well as design solution implementations; which will involve managing vendor relationships and coordinating and cooperating with field and operations staff across a Global IP Network.
The team works closely with other Engineering teams, Network Delivery and Operation teams to ensure the IP network is expanded and delivered in efficient, cost-effective way allowing the provisioning of high-quality IP services to external and internal customers.
Job Responsibilities
- Manage GTT IP address resource allocation to internal systems or other teams or customers
- Perform regular IP address auditing / discovery on the network and inside internal systems
- Engage RIRs (ARIN, APNIC, RIPE) to:
- Transfer resources smoothly between LIRs or RIRs
- Update / modify assigned resources
- Respond to and solve any cases raised by the RIRs
- Monitor billing levels
- Perform bulk cleanups of stale objects inside the RIR databases
- Have working understanding of RPSL and Reg-RWS in order to write and run ad-hoc update scripts for data inside RIR databases
- Ensure the geolocation of GTT’s resources is properly updated
- Familiarity with the most popular DNSBLs and ways to update them
- Manage a fleet of NTP and recursive name servers
- Perform the testing and introduction to the Operations environment of new platform solutions within given timelines
- Engage with outside entities such as vendors, user groups etc., through service and operational reviews
- Write scripts to audit the network status or configuration status if such need arises
- Perform strategic and tactical projects with respect to customer migrations, network upgrades & network optimisation
- Perform regular review and presentation of Core Backbone and Metro capacity
- Identify and specify ongoing operations requirements for platform, process and supporting systems
- Act as 3rd line fault escalation and ensure resolution of escalated network & customer issues within working hours
- Ad hoc escalation out of hours
- Maintain a strong knowledge of ISP industry trends
- Support customer interaction with respect to outage and service reviews
- Review of proposed customer solutions and assisting the Sales Engineering team
Experience Required
3-5 years technical experience in a complex Telecommunications environment working on a large ISP network
In-depth experience working with RIRs: RIPE, ARIN, APNIC and in-depth knowledge of processes in those RIRs when updating / adding /deleting selling or transferring resources
Understanding of DNS
Comprehensive IP and routing knowledge
Comprehensive Cisco / Juniper hardware and IOS / Junos knowledge
Understanding of telco service layers, i.e. xDSL, Frame Relay, ATM, VPN, VoIP, transmission
Ability to deliver to strict timelines for any given project
Ability to accept change and drive this change through multiple interfacing departments within an organisation
Ability to understand and execute policies and procedures
General knowledge of the telecom industry and standards
College or University degree in Technical related discipline or equivalent level of experience (time served).
Excellent English language skills a must, other languages an advantage.
