Position Title: Substation / Utility Director 
Position Location: Remote with up to 50% travel to job sites - preference to those located in the ATL area or Southeast US

Job Summary
The Substation / Utility Director regularly interacts with senior leadership and executive staff on matters concerning functional area, division and / or clients.  The Substation / Utility Director establishes operational objectives and converts strategic communication to tactical planning.  Involved in developing, modifying and executing company policies that affect immediate operations and may also have company-wide effect.


The Substation / Utility Director will be self-directed on day-to-day work and independently perform most responsibilities.  Will lead project teams and projects of complex scope and broader programs.  Will coordinate activities of other personnel.  Assists in the development of policies and procedures.


The Substation / Utility Director will communicate and operate in line with organizational goals and values, as well as departmental objectives. 

Essential Functions
Lead Utility Department Activities (25%)
  • Develop a new department and grow a team of professionals capable of supporting projects for utility companies and related clients (substation commissioning, relays programming and testing, renewables, BESS, combined-cycle, retrofits, service centers, smart-grid, etc.)  
  • Develop a go-to-market strategy for selling our services to the utility companies and related companies (design-build contractors, integrators, municipalities, etc.) within the industry
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize utility infrastructure and sell related services
  • Oversee the development and implementation of new utility services
  • Coordinate with other departments on the implementation and execution of various services necessary to support the utility projects
  • Assist in the negotiation and management of contracts and agreements with utility providers or related companies DLB provides services to
  • Ensure safety and security of department personnel by maintaining training compliance and compliance to company policies 
  • Develop and manage department budgets and resources
  • Prepare reports and presentations for executive management, as requested to identify progress of the department and services development

Oversight of Project Activities (25%) 
  • Lead the utility team and interact closely with the other department directors
  • Provide technical support for utility-related projects and initiatives
  • Oversee existing building/facility/infrastructure condition surveys and manage technical reports of findings
  • Collect data and other information for client reports
  • Review drawings and submittals 
  • Develop project proposals including project scope, schedule and budget 
  • Perform QAQC peer reviews for project deliverables

Manage Stakeholder Relations (25%) 
  • ​Responsible for execution of the firm’s client value system and assuring projects are executed in accordance with company policies and standards 
  • Serve as primary client contact for one or more clients.  May act as a Client Program Manager with business development and marketing responsibilities.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with utility providers, customers and other stakeholders
  • Assist with research for technical papers for conferences and journals
  • Work with utility and state entities on energy efficiency initiatives 
  • Attend meetings and coordinate with internal departments, government agencies, clients and other stakeholders to ensure the efficient execution of utility services (VC, phone and / or in person on jobsites)
Organizational Development and Continuous Improvement of Policies and Procedures (25%)
  • Mentor associates and assist with training and development to create a learning and growing environment 
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of utility department staff
  • Keep abreast of industry best practices and new technologies related to utility services
  • Contribute to organizational training and standards development 
  • Lead strategic planning for the group 
  • Assist with hiring process

Completion of Assigned Tasks and Deliverables on Time and on Budget
Performs Other Related Duties as Assigned

Requirements
Position Requirements (Advanced level for all the following)

Knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering principles and practices related to the field

Knowledge of construction and maintenance processes

Knowledge of utility management and operations

Knowledge of local, regional, and national regulations 

Skilled at using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), along with exceptional organizational skills for file management

Skilled in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail

Strong project management skills 

Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and drawings 

Ability to change the thinking of or influence others

Ability to work successfully in a remote environment thru effective communication and organizational skills, self-motivation, proactiveness and resourcefulness in a distraction free workspace

Ability to follow company and site safety requirements 

Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports and correspondence

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form (technical and non-technical information) 

Ability to communicate effectively directly with clients and at times serve as primary point of client contact

Travel / Relocation Requirements

Up to 50% annually, this may include travel to any or all 50 US states 

Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meeting for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.

Education / Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field
